Magda Linette v Patricia Maria Tig Head to Head
The pair have met once before, but that was in a junior event eight years ago, Linette winning in straight sets on that occasion.
Linette Heading to first Final of 2020
World number 42 Linette has an excellent chance now of reaching her fourth WTA final, and will now believe she can add to the title that she won at the Bronx Open last year, where she defeated Camila Giorgi of Italy in a marathon final.
The field in Thailand has not been the strongest this week, but the Polish number one has so far dealt with all the challenges that have been sent her way.
She began her tournament with a straight sets win over the Ukrainian Katerina Bondarenko. Then she had another straight sets win over the Chinese women Shuai Peng.
However, the 18-year-old world number 134 Xiyu Wang of China, who had knocked Petra Martic out of the event, made her work much harder in their quarter final on Friday, taking the first set off her before Linette rallied, composed herself, and fought back to take the next two.
Tig, Scourge of Chinese Players in Thailand
Tig is currently ranked 105 in the world and is the fourth ranked Romanian player after Simona Halep, Sorana Cristea, and Ana Bogdan. She has never won a senior WTA event, but has twice been a beaten finalist, in Baku in 2015, and again in her native Bucharest last year. She also won the 125 series title in Karlsruhe, Germany last year, and has won 14 ITF titles, the most recent of which came in Cancun, Mexico last June.
Unseeded for this tournament, she has had a successful run against Chinese players in Thailand so far this week. She had already battled past Yafan Wang in three sets in the first round, and then Xiaodi You. much more comfortably in the second, before taking the court against their compatriot, and the number four seed, Saisai Zheng in their quarter final on Friday.
Yet, despite the difference in their world rankings – Zheng is almost 70 places higher than her in the WTA standings – it was Tig who took control of the match in the first set, and then closed it out in the second>
Magda Linette v Patricia Maria Tig Predictions & Tips
