Ruud Rallies To Beat Local Boy Londero
Three points away from elimination, eighth seed Casper Ruud staged a brilliant comeback against local hope Juan Ignacio Londero in the semifinal on Saturday, to seal the contest 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 and reach his second tour-level final.
Serving for the match at 6-4, 5-4, Londero showed nerves, and Ruud capitalized on his mistakes. Once level, the Norwegian took control and there was no looking back.
Last year’s Houston Open finalist, Ruud, ranked 46th in the world, will be aiming for his maiden title on Sunday. And going by the way he has played through the week, he will be the favourite to win. Having not dropped a set till the semis, Ruud beat Pablo Andujar 6-2, 6-3 in the first round, trounced Roberto Carballes Baena 6-1, 6-0 in the second and Dusan Lajovic 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinal.
Ruud, who began the year by beating John Isner and Fabio Fognini in the ATP Cup, was knocked out in the first rounds of the Auckland Open and the Australian Open. However, after a mixed January, he seems to have hit form in February and will fancy his chances against unexpected finalist, Sousa.

Lucky Sousa Stumbles Into Final
Having lost in the qualifiers against Argentina’s Fabio Bagnis last Sunday, Pedro Sousa was supposed to head home. But once Chile’s Cristian Garin withdrew from the tournament, Sousa was given entry to the main draw as a lucky loser. And the 145th-ranked Portuguese made it count.
In the first round, Sousa came from a set down to defeat Argentina’s Facunda Diaz Acosta 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. In the second round, he survived another tough opponent, defeating Slovakia’s Jozef Kovalik 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5) to reach his first-ever tour-level quarterfinal.
Having reached the stage after 13 years on the tour, Sousa wasn’t content with a last eight finish as he beat Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 on Friday. On Saturday, luck favoured him again as top seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina pulled out of the semifinal with a leg injury, thus allowing the lucky loser to enter the final.
On Sunday, Sousa, the third Portuguese player ever to reach a tour-level final, will aim to become the 10th lucky loser in ATP Tour history to win a title.
