Defending Champion Tsitsipas Aiming At a Return To Form
World number six Stefanos Tsitsipas had a very good run last season, and is among the leading members of the ‘Next Gen’, that is expected to take over the baton from the Big Three in the foreseeable future.
2019 was an impressive season for the Greek, who won titles here at Marseille and at Estoril, before winning the year-end ATP Tour Finals at the O2 arena in London.
With a lot expected from him in 2020, it has been an underwhelming start to the season thus far.
A none too impressive ATP Cup, was followed by a third-round loss at the Australian Open against Milos Raonic. Tsitsipas did well to recover in his opener against Hubert Hurkacz at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam last week; only to lose in straight sets to underdog Aljaz Bedene in the next round.
The young Greek is the defending champion here at Marseille, and with more difficult fields ahead in Dubai, and at the Sunshine Masters, he will like to restore form and confidence ahead of bigger tests.
Young Ymer Coming Off Gasquet Win
Swedish prodigy Mikhail Ymer was earmarked for great things in tennis by former world number one from Sweden, Stefan Edberg.
After a successful run on the Challenger and Futures tours, and being the runner-up at the 2015 junior Wimbledon, Ymer moved to the main ATP tour. Here, although he did not meet with instant success, Ymer did well to break into the top 100 in the rankings.
Although the Swede had a somewhat indifferent run at the Next Gen ATP finals, he put up a strong fight in the Australian Open against Karen Khachanov and was inches away from a win in the decider.
The 21-year-old did well to make the round of 16 at Montpellier, defeating fellow Next Gen Jannik Sinner en route. Ymer started his campaign here with a three-set seesaw win against French veteran Richard Gasquet and will look to bring his best performance against Tsitsipas.
Stefanos Tsitsipas v Mikail Ymer Predictions & Tips
This promises to be an intriguing encounter between two exciting players, believed to have a great future ahead.
Ymer has been in good form of late, and will look to unsettle Tsitsipas early on, who maybe a little low on confidence, given his recent losses.
Expect a tight match with Tsitsipas’ superior experience assisting him to prevail in three sets.
