Dominic Thiem v Jaume Munar Head to Head

Thiem and Munar have faced off twice before this, both times on clay and Thiem leads 2-0. This includes a round of 16 win at the 2019 Barcelona Open and a second round victory in the same tournament in 2018.

Thiem Switching to Clay Following the Australian Open Campaign

A runner-up at the Australian Open, Thiem took a fortnight off since the end of that competition before making his return here at Rio. Having gotten knocked out of this tournament in the first round last year, Thiem isn’t defending too many points and a win in the first round was all he needed.

However, there was a sense of rustiness during that opening round win against the 341-ranked Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves. After wrapping up the first set in double-quick time, Thiem gave Rodrigues Alves an inch and he ended up making a mile out of it.

Rodrigues Alves got his first and only break-point of the match, converted it and refused to let go in the second set, winning it 6-4. Thiem came back to win the final set 6-1 in the end and set up this quarterfinal. The Austrian can be expected to be a lot more focussed coming into this second round match, especially given he will also be gunning for his career-best ranking of third in the world.

Struggling Start for Munar

Starting his season at the Canberra Challenger, Munar made it to the quarterfinal there before losing to Denis Kudla. Since then, however, things have deteriorated quickly in main draws of tournaments.

He got a bye to the second round in Adelaide as a lucky loser and lost in straight sets to Albert Ramos-Vinolas, fell in the second round at the Australian Open and then again in the second round at Cordoba. And then things got worse as he lost 6-3, 6-3 in the first round at Buenos Aires to Thiago Monteiro.

That scratchiness in form looked to be on display in the first round here in Rio too as he took far more time than he would have hoped to, to get past Salvatore Caruso. For a player who was deemed to be a Next Gen player, and even featured in the semifinal in the 2018 edition of that tournament, things haven’t looked the best since.

Dominic Thiem v Jaume Munar Predictions & Tips

Thiem shouldn’t have too many issues in getting past Munar in this one with a straight-set win looking like the most probable outcome.

Tip: Thiem to win in straight sets: 1/2 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
