Veronika Kudermetova v Kristina Mladenovic Head to Head

Despite being so closely ranked on WTA, this will be the first meeting between the 22-year-old Kudermetova and Mladenovic, four years her senior.

Kudermetova Aiming for Another Opening Win

After a poor start to the season where Kudermetova failed to qualify for the main draw of the Brisbane International, the Russian made it to the semifinal at Adelaide. An early exit at the Australian Open and two defeats at the Fed Cup might have pegged her back but a second round at the St. Petersburg Open finally broke that losing streak.

She lost to Kiki Bertens in that second round match but with the monkey off her back, she won three qualifying rounds including one against Bethanie Mattek-Sands to make the main draw in Dubai last week. There, drawn to face Dayana Yastremska in the first round, Kudermetova came back from a set down to upset her much-fancied opponent but that’s where the party ended for her.

Garbine Muguruza, who had give her a bye in Hobart quarterfinal, ended her campaign in Dubai but not before Kudermetova had pushed the Spaniard to another three-setter. Can she now make it to the second round of her third successive tournament in a row?

Mladenovic’s Struggling Start to 2020

A former world number 10, Mladenovic isn’t obviously showing the kind of form she had over various times in 2017 and 2019. Especially on clay.

Here, on the hard courts of Doha, things might not get too easy, as has been the case through the early part of this season. Mladenovic failed to qualify for the Brisbane International and opted to not play in any other tournaments before the Australian Open.

The lack of practice probably showed as she went down in straight sets to Karolina Pliskova in the year’s first major, and then lost another first round match at the St. Petersburg Open. This time around, it wasn’t even a very high-ranked player; Alison van Uytvanck, who didn’t start off as a favourite either, dropped just five games to complete the rout.

Finally going through the qualifiers and making the main draw at Dubai, she won her first match of the season – in main draw – but Pliskova easily got the better of her again in the second round there. Now, she has a stiff task yet again against a player who relishes playing on hard court surfaces.
