Tough Opener For Fognini Coming Off Injury
Fabio Fognini had a career-best 2019, breaking into the top ten of the ATP rankings, reaching a career high world number nine, as well as winning his first ever ATP Masters 1000, at Monte Carlo.
2020 has not looked so good thus far for the Italian. After losses to Casper Ruud and Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Cup, Fognini won his only ATP Cup match against John Isner.
Thereafter, Fognini lost his opening match at the ASB Auckland Classic and did not have the easiest of rides at the Australian Open. His first two rounds were grilling five-setters that he came through, but was defeated in four sets in the round of 16 by American Tennys Sandgren.
A tough opening match at Rotterdam against Karen Khachanov resulted in a straight set loss for Fognini, and a left calf injury saw him out of action since, being a no-show at Marseille.
Dan Evans poses a difficult opening round match to the Italian, and it remains to be seen what form and fitness Fognini is in.

Strong Start To 2020 by Evans
It has been a positive last few months for Dan Evans, who is currently the British number one and ranked number 36 in the world.
Being ranked outside the top 500 in the world at the start of 2019, a number of consistent performances in 2019, including being runner-up at the Delray Beach Open saw Evans move up the rankings gradually.
2020 got off to a good start for him with strong showings at the inaugural ATP Cup, with him leading Team Great Britain to being just inches away from pulling off an upset against Australia in the quarter-finals.
Evans’ Australian Open run ended prematurely as he lost to Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round.
The Briton continued his good run at Rotterdam where he pulled off victories against Phil Kohlschreiber and Karen Khachanov, before eventually losing to ultimate champion Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals.
Fabio Fognini v Dan Evans Predictions & Tips
This should make for an interesting match between two players with a fighting attitude and perseverance.
Although Fognini is the higher seed, there is some doubt about his fitness and his form this year has not been upto his mark yet. Also, Evans has been in good form and had some convincing wins.
Expect a tight match with the Briton edging through in a decider.
