Lauren Davis v Christina McHale Head to Head
There have been five previous outings between Davis and McHale but none of them have come after 2016. McHale leads 4-1 on head to head, having only lost in the 2013 Strasbourg Open.
Davis Has Had Starts This Season
Three tournaments played by Davis this year have all yielded in at least a first round win if not more.
At Auckland, she started off her season with a straight-set win over Varvara Lepchenko but Caroline Wozniacki got the better of her. Then, featuring at the Hobart International, Davis defeated Astra Sharma and Magda Linette in the first two rounds before Shuai Zhang won their quarterfinal.
And that was followed by her appearance at the Australian Open where Davis defeated the 17-year-old Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez in straight sets but was then drawn to face Elina Svitolina. Davis lost in straight sets but not before giving Svitolina a fight, but that said, it’s been the Ukrainian best season anyway.
Since that defeat, Davis hasn’t played any competitive tennis and that is a factor worth looking at given it’s been nearly a month-long break.
McHale Hoping to Turn Things Around
At one stage in her career, McHale was ranked 24th in the world but she has lost ground steadily to be perched at 86th on the rankings charts right now. And she has won just one main draw match in a WTA event this season so far, which makes it even worse.
That win came in her first match of the year when she proceeded to the second round at the Auckland Open with a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Ann Li. It was followed by McHale managing to grab a set off Serena Williams in the next match but she lost that and followed it up with first round losses in Hobart and Australian Open.
The one thing that does go in her favour is she featured at the Newport Beach tennis competition where she made the quarterfinal, but even that was nearly four weeks ago and how much of it will be a factor in this one remains to be seen.
Lauren Davis v Christina McHale Predictions & Tips
Davis is a favourite but not by much with bet365 offering 8/11 for her victory and McHale at 1/1. More preferred option would be the games market as the possibility of going the distance sounds real in this one.
