Petra Kvitová v Carla Suarez Navarro Head to Head

This has been one of the more underrated rivalry in women’s tennis, with 12 previous matches having led to a 6-6 scoreline between them. Their last meeting came in 2018 at New Haven where the Spaniard was leading by a set before Kvitova threw in the towel. Interestingly, at Doha, they had met at the quarterfinal stage in 2015 and Suarez Navarro was a winner there too.

Kvitova With a Decent Start But Needs a Final Under Her Belt

Ranked 11th in the world, Kvitova was a winner here in 2018 and enters this year’s competition on the back of an 8-2 win-loss record so far. She has played in three tournaments, reaching the semifinal at the Brisbane International where she lost a three-setter to Madison Keys and then making it to the quarterfinal at the Australian Open.

She did register a couple of good wins against solid opponents, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Maria Sakkari, but Ash Barty got the better of her in the last-eight. As a result, Kvitova dropped a few points given she was a finalist at the previous Australian Open.

Kvitova also comes into this one on the back of an illness at the St.Petersburg Open which had led to her giving her opponent a walkover in the quarterfinal. Following a first round bye there, she needed a three-setter against Alison van Uytvanck but opted not to take to court against Alexandrova.

She comes into this second round match at Doha after being one of the eight seeds to get an opening bye.

Suarez Navarro Has a Task on Her Hands

Once ranked sixth in the world, Spain’s Suarez Navarro has fallen off the rails and is 70th. Which is why her opening round win over China Shuai Zhang will come as a huge push for her morale, Suarez Navarro winning against a player ranked nearly 40 places above her in straight sets.

She came through 7-5, 6-0, after having not qualified for Dubai Open last week. There, she had won a couple of qualifiers but went down to Sorana Cirstea at the final hurdle.

The start to Suarez Navarro’s season hadn’t been the greatest, with opening losses at both Auckland and Adelaide. She went on to shock the tennis world at the Australian Open after that with a first round win against Aryna Sabalenka but just when one thought the tide had been turned, she went down to Iga Swiatek.

She has a sure-shot task here but will hope to dig in deep into her trove of victories against Kvitova to take some confidence into this one.
