Aryna Sabalenka v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, with Sabalenka leading their head to head record by two wins to one. Two of those matches came in 2019, Sakkari winning at the Cincinnati Open, and Sabalenka at the WTA Elite event en route to the title. The last match came only a week ago at the Dubai Tennis Championships, with Sabalenka winning in three sets.

Sabalenka’s Mixed Start to the Season

Voted WTA Player of the Year in 2018, Sabalenka has won five career titles, including the WTA Elite event last October. She is also a Grand Slam winner in doubles, claiming the US Open title last September with her long-standing partner, Elise Mertens of Belgium. Last March the pair also completed the Sunshine Double doubles of Indian Wells and Miami.

Her 2020 form has been mixed so far. She got to the semi-finals in Adelaide before losing to Dayana Yastremska of the Ukraine, but suffered disappointment in Melbourne where she was knocked out in the first round by the Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.

Playing for her country then in the Fed Cup Qualifiers in the Hague, she beat Arantxa Rus, but was then defeated by fellow Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens.

Sabalenka beat both Sakkari and Martens last week in Dubai, but lost in the semi-finals to Simona Halep.

However, after getting a walkover in the first round in Doha, she fought her way past Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in the second, despite dropping the second set to the world number 22.

Sakkari Avoids Shock Defeat to Czech Qualifier

The 24 year old Athenian won her maiden WTA title last year, beating Johanna Konta of Great Britain to win the Morocco Open, and rose into the world’s top 30 by the end of the year.

Keen to build on that progress, she began her season in Adelaide, but lost to the Croatian Donna Vecic in the second round, before reaching the fourth round in Melbourne, her best ever run in a Grand Slam, losing eventually to Petra Kvitova.

Sakkari then went to St. Petersburg and reached her first semi-final of the year, losing to Elena Rybakina, before losing first time out to Sabalenka in Dubai.

After comfortably beating Julia Goerges of Germany in the first round in Doha, she almost suffered a shock defeat to the world 152 Tereza Martincova in the second on Tuesday night. She lost the first set to the qualifier, and only levelled the match on a second set tie-break, before closing out the third set to love.

Aryna Sabalenka v Maria Sakkari Predictions & Tips

Given that these two only played each other a week ago, there is an excellent form guide on hand to determine who is likely to win this match. Sabalenka triumphed in three sets on that occasion, and may well do so again.
