Stan Wawrinka v Pedro Martinez Portero Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 34 year old Swiss player, and the Spaniard, who is 12 years younger than him.
Wawrinka Playing Just Third Event of 2020
Three time Grand Slam winner Wawrinka is playing lightly at the moment, conscious of the need not to place too much strain on a body that has had more than its fair share of injury problems in the past few years. As a consequence, this is just his third tournament of the year so far, and he has not played competitively for a month.
He began his campaign for the year in Doha, where he got to the third round only to lose to Corentin Moutet of France. However, at the Australian Open, he performed above expectations and reached the quarter finals, beating both John Isner and Daniil Medvedev in the process, before eventually going out to Alexander Zverev.
In his first round match here he overcame the challenge of Frances Tiafoe, despite dropping the second set to the American.
Martinez, a Spanish Clay Court Specialist on Challenger Tour
22 year old Martinez is primarily a clay court specialist who spends the majority of his time on the junior tours, where he has won eight Futures and one Challenger event, in Bastad, Sweden, in 2018. He also reached the finals of the Challenger tournament in Barcelona the same year, and Alicante last April.
He made his main tour debut in Marrakesh in 2018, and, last June, appeared in his maiden Grand Slam in Paris, although he lost in the first round.
Switching his attention to the main tour this year, he qualified for the Australian Open for the first time, and got to the second round, only to lose to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
Moving to the South American clay court series, he qualified for the main tournaments in Cordoba and Buenos Aires, but suffered successive second round losses, both to Serbian players – first Laslo Dere, and then Dasun Lajovic.
Last week though, he made the third round for the first time this year in Rio, before eventually suffering defeat at the hands of Hungarian Attila Balazs.
He had a good win in the first round here, beating Radu Albot of Moldova, a man ranked 44 places higher than him in the world, in straight sets.

For all Martinez’s ability on a clay court, it will be tough to watch him perform on hard courts against Wawrinka who is a step-up in class from the opponents that he is used to playing, and is likely to have too much ability and power for the Spaniard.
