Rafael Nadal v Miomir Kecmanovic Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the world number two, and the Serb ranked 48 places below him.
Nadal, Early Preparation for European Clay Court Season
For all he may claim otherwise, Nadal will have his sights firmly set for the moment on June and Roland Garros where he will be attempting not only to win his 13th French Open title, but also to draw level with Roger Federer’s Grand Slam record of 20 titles.
Having claimed his 19th at Flushing Meadows in September, he had hopes that he could equal his Swiss rival’s tally in Melbourne, but, having got to the quarter final, his run was ended by Dominic Thiem, the man he has beaten in the last two finals in Paris, and who may be one of the few men capable of thwarting his ambition later this year.
Since Melbourne, the only match he played prior to this tournament was an exhibition game, the Match for Africa, where he lost to Federer in three sets, although the Swiss will miss the French Open after undergoing knee surgery.
He began the tournament here in Mexico with a typically dominant straight sets win over fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar.
Kecmanovic, the Third Ranked Serbian Player
20-year-old Kecmanovic is now the third ranked Serbian player, behind Novak Djokovic and Filip Krajinovic, after breaking into the world’s top 50.
He has yet to win a senior ATP title, although he was the runner-up in the Antalya Open last year to the Italian Lorenzo Sonego, but has won two Challenger events, both in China, the Suzhou International in 2017, and the Shenzen Open a year later.
He has had a mixed 2020 so far, beginning in Melbourne where he was beaten in the first round by the Italian Andreas Seppi. He lost in the second round of the Challenger tournament in Newport Beach, but, then reached the semi-final in New York, only to be well beaten in straight sets by Kyle Edmund of Great Britain, who went on to win the event.
Last week in Delray Beach his participation was ended at the second round stage by Ugo Humbert of France, but he ensured that Alex de Minaur’s return to competitive tennis after injury ended in defeat in the first round in Acapulco, coming from a set down to beat the Australian.
