Zarazua’s Remarkable Run Continues

World ranked 270 Zarazua has had a remarkable run in Mexico.

The 22 year old wildcard had already achieved the best result of her career to date when she shocked the number one seed, Sloane Stephens, in the first round, beating the American in straight sets.

That earned her a meeting with the qualifier, Katie Volynets of America where, having dropped the first set, and inspired by the local crowd, she won the next two to make her maiden WTA quarter final.

She played the world number 74, Tamar Zidansk of Slovenia, on Thursday and, at first, all went according to plan for Zarazua, as she broke in the opening game of the match, and went on to wrap up the first set in just 30 minutes. The Slovenian though fought back, saved a break point, and then converted one of her own, which she then consolidated to level the match.

It was Zarazua who held her nerve in the third though, during which she did not concede a single break point, and forced a break of her own in the sixth game, closing out the match soon afterwards.

She is the first Mexican to make a WTA semi-final since Angelica Gavaldon in 1993.

Fernandez, Teenager who Beat Bencic in Switzerland

17 year old Fernandez is the reigning junior French Open champion, and has already been in three ITF finals, winning her first title in Gattinea, Canada, last July.

Despite her youth she is already making an impact in the senior game and, earlier this month, stunned Belinda Bencic in front of her home fans in Switzerland, beating the world number five in straight sets playing for Canada in the Fed Cup.

She came through two rounds of qualifying in Mexico to make the main draw of a WTA event for the fifth time, and has yet to drop a set in Acapulco. First she beat Nina Stojanovic the word number 82 from Serbia, and then knocked out the number 8 seed Nao Hibino of Japan, to make her maiden WTA quarter-final.

Then, in a battle of the teenagers, she overcame 18 year old Anastasia Potapova of Russia to set up the clash with Zarazua.

Renata Zarazua v Leylah Annie Fernandez Predictions & Tips
