Caroline Garcia v Alison van Uytvanck Head to Head

This will be the second match between Garcia and van Uytvanck with the first having come at the 2019 Fed Cup. Garcia was a three-set winner over van Uytvanck in that one.

Garcia Wins Two in a Row…

…and that’s something she hasn’t done all season. This is her sixth tournament of the year and Garcia, before this, had won just two matches in the entire season, beating Taylor Townsend in Auckland and against Madison Brengle at the Australian Open.

Since then, three losses followed before the start of this tournament, following which she went into this tournament.

Her showing against Greet Minnen was on the lines of things had gone for her all season; a struggle which saw her getting taken to a third set. And a tie-breaker at that. Which is why, even when she went into the second round match against Ysaline Bonaventure as a favourite, there was every chance of a surprise.

Which is also why, a straight-set win, a 7-5, 6-2 victory could have gone a long way in instilling a lot of confidence going into the rest of the tournament.

Comeback Win for van Uytvanck

She was down a set and then a break down in the second set of her second round match against Viktoriya Tomova but Alison van Uytvanck isn’t one to give up too easily. She fought back, broke back and then went ahead to take a 3-1 lead.

Not to be outdone, Tomova retaliated with something similar to break back twice and take a 4-3 lead, needing to retain her serve just twice to win the match. Instead, van Uytvanck won the next three games to scoop the set, and while she lost the initiative in the third set following an early break, the Belgian completed the win in a tie-breaker.

That win followed a first round victory against Katarzyna Kawa, which was a lot more straightforward, a 6-1, 6-3 win. Interestingly, van Uytvanck will now be facing an opponent who defeated her girlfriend Minnen in the first round of the competition.
