Sofia Kenin v Alison van Uytvanck Head to Head
There have been three previous encounters between Kenin and van Uytvanck with the Belgian having won twice. However, all those three came in the pre-2019 era when Kenin was only just finding her way to the top. Kenin’s only win over van Uytvanck came in 2018 where she won in Mallorca on grass in three sets.
Kenin Fighting Hard to Recreate Magic
Things haven’t been the best for Kenin following her Australian Open title win but in this competition in Lyon, she has already shown a lot of fight.
Ranked fifth in the world, she was stretched to three sets by Jaqueline Cristian, a 174th qualifier, in her second round match. And this was followed by another three-setter against Oceane Dodin, who came back from the easy loss of the first set to grab the second in a tie-breaker.
Not to be outdone, Kenin found her bearings in the third to clinch it in the third.
Earlier in the tournament, Kenin had started off her campaign with an easy, 6-4, 6-3 win against Vitalia Diatchenko and with three defeats in four previous matches, this run of three straight wins will put her in the right frame of mind heading into the next week’s Indian Wells Open.

Crushing Win for van Uytvanck
With two title wins in 2019, van Uytvanck is no pushover, especially since indoor hard court is her favourite surface. However, going up against Caroline Garcia, the third seed, it looked like a contest which could go the distance. In the end, van Uytvanck was in control throughout the encounter and won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Needing just 71 minutes in her win, van Uytvanck faced eight break-points in her quarterfinal but wasn’t broken even once against a player she had never defeated before this.
Before this, Viktoriya Tomova had pushed van Uytvanck to a three-setter in the second round but the Belgian’s grit and experience under pressure seems to have saved her. That is what she will need going up against the Australian Open winner, a player herself looking to get back to her best.
