Jack Sock v Steve Johnson Head to Head
Including Challenger meetings, Jack Sock and Steve Johnson have played each other ten times. Their head-to-head is locked at 5-5, but it is the older American Johnson who has won their last two meetings including the most recent match at the Delray Beach Open last month.
Sock Enjoying A Brief Renaissance in California
Jack Sock momentarily thwarted to become America’s next generation superstar in tennis after a breakout season in 2017. He famously won the Paris Masters at the tail end of that year, reached a career-high ranking of World No.8 and more impressively, qualified for the prestigious ATP Finals in London.
But the 27-year-old from Nebraska suffered a jaw-dropping slump in 2018, winning just 10 out of 35 matches and dropped out of the word’s top-100 as a result.
Things could only take a turn for the worse. The American tore his ligaments in his right thumb while practicing snowboarding at the start of 2019 and missed the entire first half of the season. He returned during the summer, but never won a match on tour or at Challenger level.
They say, good things come to those who wait. For Jack Sock, the patience has pushed him to the brink of becoming tennis’ forgotten man, but it could be worth it after all.

Johnson Eyeing Second Title of 2020
After a subpar season in 2019, Steve Johnson returned to the winner’s circle as early as January this year when he won the Bendigo Challenger in Australia. In fact the 30-year-old American fared impressively pre-Australian Open, reaching the quarterfinals in Canberra in the opening week and losing in a tight two-setter to eventual champion Philipp Kohlschreiber.
However, Johnson’s Australian Open journey was short as he was dovetailed to cross paths with Roger Federer in first round. Despite a straight-sets loss, Johnson has continued his fine form on the Challenger tour where reached a semifinal in Newport at the start of February.
Johnson’s best result at tour-level this year is a quarterfinal showing in Delray where he beat Jack Sock en route. Can the former World No.21 pick up his second title of 2020?
Jack Sock v Steve Johnson Predictions & Tips
Jack Sock needed another three-setter to beat the highly-talented Brandon Nakashima in the semis. It was symbolic of Sock’s struggles this week and how he got in the final. The one-time World No.8 is a former semifinalist of the Indian Wells Masters, but a title win this week could spark a return to those glory days of 2017. Can he beat an in-form Johnson?
It would be sentimental to pick Sock to win here considering how terrific Johnson has been on the Challenger tour in 2020, but I suspect he will be in buoyant spirits to get over the line.
