Tennis News Today: Kevin Anderson Overcomes Fitness Woes

Kevin Anderson announces comeback plan

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, a former world number five, is fit to play and would have made his comeback in Miami but for the coronavirus outbreak.

Anderson, who had played just 20 matches last year and featured in three tournaments in 2020, opted for a knee surgery to overcome a niggling issue which had been causing him problems for a while. His attempted comeback in Australia ended with just three wins from six matches including a second round loss at the Australian Open.

However, he now has some good news. Anderson said he is fully fit to make a comeback and the Miami Masters, which was supposed to begin next week before getting cancelled, would have been his first competition back.

Speaking to the official ATP website, he said:

“My recovery’s gone great. I think it’s been really successful so far. I probably would have been ready for Monte-Carlo and the clay-court season.”

“Obviously that’s not going to happen anymore, so we just had to readjust and now I’ll be at home and I feel like the toughest part of getting over the surgery and recovery has been done.”

Anderson also said he was confident with his fitness and despite not being fully able to train, he was positive he would be okay when situation with the coronavirus changed for better.

Speaking of the virus outbreak itself, Anderson said the situation was bigger than the sport.

Anderson is a two-time Grand Slam finalist, having lost to Rafael Nadal in the 2017 US Open title-decider and then to Novak Djokovic in the 2018 Wimbledon final. His best showing at the Australian Open and the French Open have been fourth round appearances.

The South African has also won six ATP titles including the 2018 Vienna Open and the 2019 Pune Open, his last two tournament wins.
