Ekaterina Alexandrova v Fiona Ferro Head to Head
This will be the first time between Alexandrova and Ferro as they go head to head for a place in the quarterfinals in Palermo.
Alexandrova Stretched in Round One
While Alexandrova was the favourite going into her opening round match against Kristina Mladenovic, there was every chance of her getting stretched to three sets as we had thought. What the Russian will be pleased with is the manner in which she came back after losing the first set.
Alexandrova won 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 to clinch her place in the last-eight, taking two hours and 12 minutes to get to the next round. Speaking to the organisers after the match, the Russian admitted she was nervous in the first set but found her bearings in the second.
This result follows a set of losses for the Russian during the pandemic break in which she participated in the Tipsport Elite Trophy. She won just one of the five matches she participated in but the experience of having played on clay would have undoubtedly helped.
In Ferro, she faces her second successive French opponent and this time a far tougher one on this surface.

Having entered this tournament on the back of back to back exhibition tournament wins during the break on hard court surfaces, we thought Ferro might be tested in her opener against Nadia Podoroska on clay. As it turned out, Ferro crashed through to a straight-set, 6-2, 6-1 win in her opener.
Ferro’s record this year, including those exhibition wins, reads a solid 15-5, but if one were to specifically look at her clay court showing, Ferro has been excellent in her career. Last year she won 17 of her 24 matches on the surface, and then in 2018, it was 26-11 in her favour.
Alexandrova will be a tough opponent on account of her superior ranking – 27th to 53rd – but Ferro’s a better clay court player and should be able to run the Russian around.
