These two players haven’t played each other before this at any level.
Paolini Continues Clay Court Winning Run
The Italian world number 95 had ended her season before the coronavirus break with some underwhelming performances including back to back qualifying losses in Dubai and Monterrey. Things have changed since that for Paolini.
She started off with a ‘pre-season’ exhibition tournament at the Campionati Italiani Assoluti where she overcame other Italian players on clay, winning four in a row, to win the title. And starting off at the Palermo Open, Paolini overcame the loss of the first set against Daria Kasatkina to march into the second round.
A former world number 10, Kasatkina raced off to win the first set but Paolini, playing at home, came back from behind to edge out the Russian. Later she admitted it was an emotional win given it was at home and in her first match since the return of the tour.
Where Paolini will need to improve in her second round is the number of break-points she offered in the first round – a grand total of 34 of them. That she allowed only 10 of them to be converted speaks volumes of her mental toughness but things could change against an opponent willing to take her chances.

Qualifier Sasnovich Stuns Mertens
Sasnovich was one of the four qualifiers (including a lucky loser) to make it to the second round and one of two to beat a seeded player to make it through. Sasnovich defeated the fifth seeded Elise Mertens in her opener to set up this meeting against Paolini.
What makes it super special is the manner of her win. Sasnovich gave the world number 23 not too many chances in the encounter and clinched it in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Mertens was in the match till 4-4 in the first set but once Sasnovich broke her opponent in the 10th game of the match, there was no looking back for her. She captured the set with that break of serve and followed it up with a sizzling second set showing which allowed the Dutchwoman to win just one game.
With that win, Mertens has now won four successive matches without dropping a set including three in the qualifiers.
Jasmine Paolini v Aliaksandra Sasnovich Prediction & Tip
On the face of it, this is one of the most even matches of the day. On the one side is 95th-ranked, home player Paolini and on the other is the more experienced but 119th-ranked Sasnovich who is on bit of a roll. And while Paolini is 11/8 to win this as opposed to 8/15 for a Sasnovich victory, the Italian’s superior clay court record makes her our favourite.
