Elise Mertens v Rebecca Peterson Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before in the same event two years ago. Mertens won that thriller of a match on a third set tie-break.

Mertens, a Beaten finalist in Prague

24-year old Mertens has won five senior WTA titles, the most senior of which, her first win in a Premier tournament, came last year at the Qatar Open, when she beat Simona Halep in the final, continuing a long rivalry between the pair.

She also has enjoyed considerable success on the doubles court with her regular partner Aryna Sabalenka. They won the US Open in New York last September, and also won three more WTA titles in 2019, completing the “Sunshine Double” of Indian Wells and Miami.

Prior to lockdown she reached the quarter-finals in Shenzhen and Hobart and made the fourth round in Melbourne only to lose to Halep. Mertens then helped Belgium beat Kazakhstan in the Fed Cup before suffering second round defeats in Dubai and Doha.

When competitive action resumed again, she was defeated in the first round in Palermo, beaten in straight sets by Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus. But then she reached the final in Prague last weekend, only to be beaten by her nemesis Halep again.

It will be interesting to see how she adapts to hard courts after having played on clay over the past couple of weeks or so.

Peterson, the Swedish Number One

Peterson is the current number one ranked Swedish player, and has two career titles to her name, both victories coming in China last autumn. First, she won the Jiangxi Open and followed that up with victory in Tianjin the following month.

She also has one senior doubles title to her name – the 2015 Rio Open, when she was partnered by Ysaline Bonaventure of Belgium.

2020 did not start well for her, however. She was beaten in the first rounds in Auckland, Hobart, and Melbourne, and although she did make the quarter-finals in Monterrey, she was beaten by Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands.

In her one match post lockdown, she was beaten in the first round in Palermo by Camila Giorgi of Italy.

Elise Mertens v Rebecca Peterson Prediction & Tip

Although both lost in the first round in Palermo, Mertens then played herself into form with her run to the final in Prague. She was in the better form prior to lockdown, and won the previous match between the two, and will start favourite to do so again.

Tip: Mertens to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
