Elena Rybakina v Katarina Zavatska Head to Head

Rybakina and Zavatska have faced off once before this with the match having come on the ITF circuit. Rybakina had come off a straight-set winner, before losing in the second round of that tournament in Brescia played on clay.

Rybakina’s Resumption Ends in Opening Loss

Ranked at her career-best ranking of 17th in the world Rybakina faced the brunt of rustiness going into her first competition since the tennis tour was suspended because of the pandemic. She went down in straight sets to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round of the Cincinnati Open and now enters the US Open on the back of very little practice having not played a single match during the break.

On the other hand, Rybakina has some fond memories to look at this season. She started the year with a finals appearance at the Shenzhen Open where she had lost to Alexandrova, but then came back strongly to win the Hobart International title.

At the Australian Open, Rybakina made the third round – her best Grand Slam showing ever – before two back to back finals appearances followed at the St. Petersburg Open and WTA Dubai. She also reached the third round at the Qatar Open and was tipped to give Ash Barty a strong fight but allowed her opponent a walkover because of a leg injury.

The rustiness will be bit of a factor alright but once she can find some of her rhythm, she should get going easily. Especially while facing a player whose best career rank is outside the top 100.

Zavatska Hasn’t Seen Second Round Since September 2019

It was last year in September that Zavatska reached the second round of a WTA competition and she made it all the way to the semifinal there in Tashkent. There was a Challenger in Houston later that year in which Zavatska performed well but otherwise there hasn’t been too much.

In 2020, Zavatska began with back to back WTA tournament losses in qualifiers, and one ITF competition round win later, went down in the opening round of the ATP Dubai qualifiers as well. Getting a direct entry into the Acapulco Open, Zavatska lost in straight sets in her opener before making the second round of a $125k competition.

During the pandemic, Zavatska featured at the European Pro Tennis Series but once the season resumed, another qualifying loss at the Cincinnati Open means she starts off at the US Open without a lot of confidence going for her.

Elena Rybakina v Katarina Zavatska Prediction & Tip

This should be as straightforward as they come for Rybakina despite having played just one match since February this year. Straight-set win for her.

Tip: Rybakina to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
