Peterson Back to Venue of Best Major Showing

Having first featured in a Grand Slam qualifier at the US Open in 2015, Peterson’s best showing at a major came in 2018 at Flushing Meadows itself when she made it to the third round of the tournament there. The run included a shock victory against the the then-31st seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova after being a set down in the first round.

That was followed by a season to remember for Peterson when she went on to win two titles in 2019. Both, on hard court surfaces.

Unfortunately for the 46th-ranked Peterson, the start-stop nature of 2020 hasn’t helped her too much. She started the three back to back defeats, losing all opening rounds at Auckland, Hobart and Melbourne, before she won her first. It came on the hard courts of Monterrey where Peterson managed to make it to the quarterfinal.

That’s where the season ended for her – and others – and on her return, Peterson has lost both her opening round matches again. One on clay at Palermo and then at the Cincinnati Open against Elise Mertens.

Can she turn things around here?

Flipkens Hasn’t Made Round Three Since 2014

Flipkens is a tennis veteran who has been around since 2002 and played in Grand Slams since 2004. There have been two appearances in the fourth round of a major since then, both of which came in 2013. At Wimbledon she went on to make it to the semifinal before getting knocked out by the eventual champion Marion Bartoli.

Unfortunately for her, that’s never happened again. The best result since that semifinal came in 2014 when she made the third round at Wimbledon but all other Grand Slam appearances have typically ended between the first and second round.

The Belgian couldn’t have hoped for too much better than a 46th-ranked opponent for her first round match and having gotten the better of 55th-ranked Katerina Siniakova in their opening encounter in the Cincinnati Open, it should give her some confidence here. That said, that second round appearance was her only one this season.
