Victoria Azarenka v Barbara Haas Head to Head
The pair have never played each other in a competitive match before. This will be the first-ever meeting between them.

Azarenka, Coming off a Surprise Title Win at Cincinnati
At the start of this year, it looked like that it was a matter of time before the Belarussian would call it quits from the sport. Issues on and off the field in the last few years took its toll on her and she admitted that not so long ago she was thinking of hanging up her boots.
A two-year-long legal custody battle with the father of her son weighed her down and she even withdrew from the Australian Open in 2018 at the last minute because of that.
The former world number one and multiple Grand Slam winner hardly played any tennis in the 2017 and 2018 season. But having put all of that behind her, she seems to have got a second wind to her career.
In the 2019 season, she showed glimpses of her old self by reaching the finals at Monterrey and then getting to the last eight at Stuttgart and Rome. But once again injuries forced her to end the season earlier than expected.
But out of nowhere she rolled back the years last week at Cincinnati Masters and went to on to beat five players higher than her in the rankings to reach the final. A stroke of luck followed as Naomi Osaka had to withdraw from the final and the Belarussian won her first title in four years.
She played some scintillating tennis and looked back to her best. She will be hoping to replicate some of the form she showed back in 2012 and 2013 where she reached the finals at the Flushing Meadows.

Haas Lucky to have Made it to the Main Draw
Belinda Bencic’s decision to not come to New York this year opened up a wildcard entry for the 24-year-old Austrian. The fact that there were no qualifiers this year at the US Open would have meant that there was a good chance that she would not have been in New York.
But she will have to bring out her A-game and hope that Azarenka has an off day to have any chance of progressing to the next round. Haas started playing professionally when she was just 16 and has been a successful player at the lower levels.
She has won 16 titles at ITF level but has never quite made the cut on the main tour. In fact, the only other time she reached the main draw at a Grand Slam was back in 2016 when she lost in the first round at the US Open.
Whatever happens against the Belarussian, she is guaranteed to achieve a new career-best ranking as she is just six spots lower than her best ever of 133.
Victoria Azarenka v Barbara Haas Prediction & Tip
It is likely to be a straight forward win for Azarenka. She played some amazing tennis at Cincinnati last week and is going to be dangerous for anyone in New York over the fortnight. Haas, on the other hand, would be glad to have made it to the main draw but is unlikely to home anything more than that.
Tip: Azarenka to go through in straight sets: 10/11 (bet365)
