Zverev Withstands Anderson Challenge

Kevin Anderson is a former US Open runnerup and while he is only just returning from his fitness issues, his tall, solid-serving makes for a stiff opponent that early in a Grand Slam. And Zverev faced a huge challenge alright, needing a tie-breaker in the first set and four sets overall to pass the Anderson test and move into the second round.

With that Zverev recorded his first win of the post-pandemic season having gone down in three sets to Andy Murray in the second round of the Cincinnati Open last week. Earlier this year, Zverev had made it to the semifinal of the Australian Open, which was his best showing at a Grand Slam.

That had come on the back of three successive defeats at the ATP Cup, and was followed by a shock second round exit at the Acapulco Open following which the tour went on a lockdown.

With Zverev having never made it past the fourth round at the Flushing Meadows, his first aim would be to reach the last-eight but a lot would depend on how he gets past talented but low-ranked players like Nakashima.

Nakashima Wins First Major Main Draw Match

In his very first ATP tournament he had participated in earlier this year at Delray Beach, wildcard entrant Nakashima made it to the quarterfinal on the back of a couple of wins. And now, playing in his first Grand Slam main draw, he has taken a step further by entering the second round as a 223rd-ranked player.

That opening win over Paolo Lorenzi will bring him valuable ranking points and an improvement to his standings on the ATP charts. With that, however, it would also help him realise the potential many think he has – many an expert have tipped him to be one to watch in the future, especially given the mental side of his game.

And that was on display in the first round too when Lorenzi suddenly found another gear to his game in the third set after losing the first two 6-3, 6-2. Nakashima could have easily lost his nerve with the change in momentum but he held on, held his serve and took the set into a tie-breaker in which he came away an easy winner.

Sure Zverev won’t prove to be an opponent as easy as Lorenzi but Nakashima could still test him out here.

Alexander Zverev v Brandon Nakashima Prediction & Tip

We suspect Zverev has too much class to be worried about Nakashima but the American has the potential to steal a set here or there in this one.

Tip: Nakashima to win a set – Yes: 5/6 (bet365)
