Alex de Minaur v Vasek Pospisil Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between the two players, with de Minaur winning both their meetings, in 2018 on the hard courts. The players met at the Citi Open in Washington D.C., followed by the Masters 1000 in Shanghai. Incidentally, both players have followed similar paths at the US Open, especially from being two sets to one down, to win their previous round matches.

De Minaur Looking To Better 2019 US Open Performance

Alex de Minaur burst on to the scene as a teenager in 2018, when he reached two ATP finals, in Sydney and at the Citi Open in Washington DC, where he was runner-up at both.

2019 was an even better year where he won three ATP titles – in Sydney. Atlanta, and Zhuhai. He was also a beaten finalist at the Swiss indoors in Basel, where he was defeated by Roger Federer, and was runner-up in the season-ending Next Gen ATP finals in Milan, after a shock loss to Jannik Sinner.

The Aussie registered his best Grand Slam performance here in New York last year, when he reached the fourth-round, beating Kei Nishikori on the way, his first ever win over a top-ten ranked player, before losing to Grigor Dimitrov.

This year his US Open campaign began with a comfortable win over Andrej Martin of Slovenia, and followed it with a well-fought fourth round win against French veteran Richard Gasquet. De Minaur was off to a flying start against fellow Next Gen Karen Khachanov, winning the first set, but the Russian pulled back with convincing second and third set wins. The Aussie hung in and exhibited immense grit and determination, as he came back to win the next two sets and clinch a fourth round berth again.

Pospisil Return To Tour Continues To Get Better

Canadian Vasek Pospisil returned to the tour  last year after a long injury related hiatus. Once ranked as high as number 25 in the ATP rankings in the middle of the last decade, it has been a difficult road back to the tour following back injuries and surgery.

After a good performance at the Davis Cup for Canada at the end of last season, Pospisil was a finalist at Montpelier in February, securing wins against David Goffin and Denis Shapovalov. He followed it up with a quarter-final appearance at Marseille, losing to eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, before the season took a break because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Coming into the US Open,  Pospisil was the underdog in his second round match against fellow Canadian Milos Raonic.  However, after losing the first set, Pospisil came back strong to clinch the match in four sets. Up against one of the most consistent players on the tour Roberto Bautista Agut in the round of 32 that followed, Pospisil was down two sets to one and just when it looked like Agut was en route the round of 16, Pospisil put up a spirited fight to clinch the match in five sets and get to the round of 16 for the first time in his career at the US Open.

Although Pospisil has exceeded all expectations, he will now be hoping to keep it going and qualify for the final eight.

De Minaur v Pospisil Prediction & Tip

An unexpected, but evenly matched fourth round lies ahead of us; both players have recorded wins against well established opponents and will be coming in high on confidence. What remains to be seen, is who recovers better and that will be one of the deciding factors for this encounter.

De Minaur, who has the younger legs and more match practice in recent times, will start as a slight favorite, and his gritty all round game should see him better his 2019 US Open showing, in four close sets.

Tip: De Minaur to win in four sets: 10/3 (bet365)
