Alexander Zverev v Borna Coric Head to Head

This will be the fifth meeting between the two players, with Coric leading the head-to-head 3-1.

They have met three times on hard courts and once on grass, with Zverev’s only win coming at the Miami Masters 1000 in 2018. The players also met in the second round of the US Open in 2017, with Coric winning in four tight sets.

After A Shaky Start, Zverev Emerges As Top Half Favorite

Number five seed Alexander Zverev has exhibited promise and talent since 2017 and done well to win three Masters 1000 ATP titles.

However, he has not lived up to his billing at the majors and the 2020 Australian Open semi-final remains his best performance at a major. Coaching relationships, indifferent form, serving challenges and poor showings at big matches in majors have all been a deterrent, resulting in him being unable to live up to expectations.

The German had a tough opener against 2017 US Open runner-up South African Kevin Anderson, which went to four sets. However, his next two rounds were expected to be clinical but none were easy wins, with both Brandon Nakashima and Adrian Mannarino taking a set off Zverev, and the number five seed running into issues with his serve yet again.

Coming into the round of 16, Zverev was up against little known Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and the German did well to prevail in straight sets.

With Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated by Borna Coric in a thrilling five-setter, and tournament favorite Novak Djokovic disqualified in unfortunate circumstances, Zverev has emerged as the highest seed in the top half of the draw, and possibly the favorite to emerge as a finalist from his half.

It remains to be seen if the world number seven Zverev can finally shine on the big stage, as he has been expected to for a while now.

Coric Making Amends after Troublesome Summer

23-year-old Borna Coric has been on the circuit for a while and made news for a host of different reasons, from defeating Roger Federer twice in 2018, including on grass, to making the finals of the ATP Master 1000 in Shanghai the same year, to some not so positive media this summer around the Adria Tour and Covid-19.

After a successful 2018, 2019 saw a mix of injuries and poor form and just as he was looking back to himself making the semi-finals at the ATP 500 in Rio this February, the season was halted by the pandemic.

Coric participated in the now not so well looked upon Adria Tour and not only did he get the virus, he was also involved in a social media spat with Nick Kyrgios of Australia.

His form ever since he recovered from the virus and started playing again was patchy and seemed to lack any sort of rhythm. At the Western & Southern Open he did well to win his first-round match against Benoit Paire but the Frenchman had to retire after the first set. Coric lost in straight sets in the second round to David Goffin.

The Croat did not start the US Open comfortably, winning an evenly-matched opener against Pablo Andujar of Spain before a marathon five-setter against Juan Ignacio Londero, where he came from two sets to one down to win in five sets.

Against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round, the Croat was down 1-5 in the fourth set and saved six match points to equalize and clinch the match in a final set tiebreak.

In the fourth round, Coric looked comfortable and confident against Aussie Jordan Thompson, and will be eager to rest on Monday, before his crucial quarterfinal against Zverev.

Zverev v Coric Prediction & Tip

The exit of Novak Djokovic on Sunday has ensured that the US Open will see a new Grand Slam champion. The absence of the Big Three in the final eight will also ensure that the remaining candidates will look at this as an opportunity to push themselves across the line for that elusive major title.

Coric leads the head-to-head and knows what it takes to beat the German. However, Zverev will start as a favorite, given his better run of form and credentials since the two players met last almost 30 months back.  It will however be a tight contest and will come down to the better player on the day.

Expect a tight four set win for Zverev.

Tip: Zverev to win in four sets: 2/1 (bet365)
