Miomir Kecmanovic v Federico Delbonis Head to Head

This will be the first time that Kecmanovic and Delbonis will be going head to head in a match.

Kecmanovic Juggernaut Rolls On

The Serb started off the tournament by losing the first set of his first round match against Kei Nishikori, a player returning to tennis after nearly a year. One expected Nishikori to be a tad rusty, so losing the first set would have almost meant curtains for lesser payers given that is probably the best time to test opponents who are returning after a while.

Not Kecmanovic though. He rallied to win the next two sets to stun the Japanese former world number four, and then crushed Jordan Thompson in the second round in straight sets.

Now at his career-best ranking of 47th, Kecmanovic could well be looking at a solid improvement in his standings given he hadn’t played at this tournament last season. That, combined with the fact Kecmanovic has a 7-1 win-loss record on clay this year across different competitions including exhibitions, means we could be looking at one of the dark horses of the tournament.

Qualifier Delbonis Yet to Drop a Set

Delbonis has seen better days in his career. He has upset Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka on clay (and beaten Andy Murray on hard court too) and loves the surface in general.

Once ranked 33rd in the world, he has fallen to 79th, and had to make it through the qualifiers to get to the main draw here. No problems indeed, he seemed to have said.

An easy couple of opponents in the qualifying rounds were swatted away in straight sets, before he routed fellow Argentina Juan Londero 6-4, 6-0 in his opener. And then playing the fourth seeded Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round, Delbonis fought back in the first set to register another straight-set victory and move to the last eight.

The Argentine had earlier made it to the quarterfinal at the Santiago Open right before the pandemic struck and did not play a single match after that till August. And having been beaten in the opening rounds at both Cincinnati Open and US Open, things looked spiralling down quickly for Delbonis before this resurrection.

Can he continue his charge though?

Kecmanovic v Delbonis Prediction & Tip

Kecamanovic is the in-form player and while Delbonis has the experience, we see the Serb go through to the semifinal here.

Tip: Kecmanovic to win: 4/6 (bet365)
