Who is playing?
It’s the world number nine Naomi Osaka going up against the 27th-ranked Victoria Azarenka in the final of the 2020 US Open. And it’s the second time in three weeks they will be coming face to face – or at least are expected to, because the last time they were to play, Osaka had pulled out of the Cincinnati Open final, because of a hamstring injury.
This time around Osaka looks like she has managed her injury well despite being stretched by her opponents at times. On the other hand, Azarenka has seen a lot of adversity off the court, played just two tournaments this year going into the Cincinnati Open and all of a sudden has shown signs of getting back to her best.
Her comeback from behind win against Serena Williams in the semifinal would have given her the kind of confidence she needed – not that she looks short of it anyway – coming into this final against a top-class opponent.
When will the US Open 2020 Women’s Singles Final be played?
The Azarenka-Osaka final will be played on Saturday, September 12 and expected to begin at around 4 pm local time, which is 9 pm BST or 6 am if you are in Japan.
Are there any other matches on the day?
There are quite a few other matches to be played other than the women’s singles final. Play at the Arthur Ashe Stadium begins at 12 noon with the wheelchair doubles final between the top seed pair of A. Hewett and G. Reid and Frenchmen S. Houdet and N. Peifer who are the second seeds. The women’s singles final will follow this match.
At the Louis Armstrong Stadium, there will be a round-robin match of the wheelchair quad singles between Sam Schroder and Andy Lapthorne and then one between match between Dylan Alcott and David Wagner on Court 11.
The wheelchair women’s singles final and wheelchair quad doubles final will also be played today, with Diede De Groot playing Yui Kamiji in the former while Alcott/Lapthorne combining to take on Schroder/Wagner in the latter.
