Milos Raonic v Adrian Mannarino Head to Head
The pair have played each other three times before, and Raonic leads their head-to-head series by two matches to one. Raonic won at the French Open in 2016, and again in Tokyo two years later. Sandwiched between those victories, Mannarino won at the Canadian Masters in 2017.

A Wimbledon finalist in 2016, Raonic reached his first ATP final in two years at the Cincinnati Open, before losing to Novak Djokovic.
That continued his return to form in 2020 which began in Melbourne, when he reached the quarter-finals, only to lose to Djokovic again, and then he went on to reach the quarter-finals in Delray Beach again.
He was hoping to carry that form into the US Open as well, but was surprisingly beaten in the second round by his countryman Vasek Pospisil.
Clay though does not suit his style. He relies heavily on his serve and his all-court game is designed around short points, not long, drawn-out rallies. All of his ATP titles and finals have come on hard courts, although he was a quarter-finalist in Paris back in 2014.

Mannarino Glad to be Back in Europe Again
Mannarino will be glad just to be back on European soil once more, after he was one of the French players forced to enter a “bubble within a bubble” in New York, after his compatriot Benoit Paire was diagnosed with Covid-19.
Despite those restrictions, he acquitted himself well there and got to the third round before losing in four sets to Alexander Zverev. That was a much better showing than at the Cincinnati Open, where he was beaten in the first round by John Millman of Australia.
One of the nearly men of the sport, prior to the start of last year, Mannarino had been in six ATP career finals and lost the lot. he finally put that right on the grass of s-Hertogenbosch last June, and went on to reach the finals in Moscow and Zhuhai.
None of those finals have been on clay, however. He is much happier on grass or on a clay court, as evidenced by the fact that he has never been further than the second round of his home Grand Slam in Paris in 12 previous attempts.

This is a match between two men who are much more at home on a hard court than clay. Raonic though is the man in form this year, and he will start the favourite to progress in this match.
