David Goffin v Marin Cilic Head to Head
This is an interesting rivalry which has seen seven matches played between Goffin and Cilic between 2016 and 2019. Goffin leads 4-3, but in their sole match which was played on clay, Cilic had registered a straight-set win over his opponent.
The venue for that encounter? Rome. 2017.
Their last meeting came at the Basel Open in 2019 where Goffin won 6-4, 6-4.

It’s not been the best season of tennis for Goffin, with the returns having been modest at best.
Sure, there was a semifinal at the Montpellier Open, and he then made it to the fourth round last week at the US Open but that impacting long run in a competition has never come. And Goffin will be playing his first match on clay this season as well, making it that much tougher.
Now while clay isn’t that big an issue for Goffin – his first ever ATP title came on the clays of Kitzbuhel – the Belgian finished 6-6 on win-loss on the surface last season. While there was a third round at the French Open last season, there were also opening losses in Barcelona and Madrid on the same surface.
Goffin, however, shouldn’t worry too much once he can get his rhythm on clay. It was at the French Open in 2012 he first announced himself when he made the fourth round as a lucky loser. He followed it up with a quarterfinal at the same tournament in 2016 – his joint-best performance in a Grand Slam till date.
It’s just about getting used to things first up.

Cilic Has Had His Share of Clay Success
Two of Cilic’s 18 career titles have come on clay and while that doesn’t translate to a great percentage for the former world number three, it also shows he has not been a mug on the surface.
In fact it was as recently as the 2018 French Open that Cilic made it to the quarterfinal and while he did not have the greatest time on the surface last year, the Croat was a quarterfinalist at the Madrid Masters there.
This year, Cilic looked to be returning to some overall form, which has been slightly elusive in his case for a while, by winning the first three rounds at the Australian Open. A straight-set loss to Milos Raonic in the fourth proved to be a dampener. That, however, has been followed by a string of early exits and a third round defeat at the US Open.
It’s these inconsistencies that make Cilic a difficult player to predict and against another player who has had a similar sort of a record in recent times, things could get very interesting.

Goffin’s the bookmaker’s favourite in this one with odds of 2/5 and we reckon he should scrape through this one. Instead of picking a winner though, we will go with the sets in the match market.
