Elena Rybakina v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

This will be the first time the 21-year-old Rybakina and Putintseva, who is four years her senior will be playing in a competitive encounter.

Rybakina Getting Back Her Rhythm

With four WTA tournament final appearances this season for Rybakina – of which she won – the Kakazh was expected to do a lot better when the season resumed. She didn’t, getting knocked out in the first round at the Cincinnati Open and the second round at the US Open.

Which is why there were a few question-marks over her form coming into the Italian Open, but by the looks of things Rybakina seems to have dispelled them all.

For starters she avenged her Cincinnati loss to Ekaterina Alexandrova by winning the first round in Rome, 6-0, 6-4. In the second, she faced Marie Bouzkova and while she was stretched in both the sets of a match that saw the two players have their chances, Rybakina came through 7-5, 7-6.

Rybakina, who has never progressed beyond the first round at the French Open, Italian Open or Madrid Open before this tournament, is now facing a very realistic prospect of entering the quarterfinal. To do that, she will need to get past her countrywoman.

Putintseva Puts it Across Martic Again

Putintseva and Petra Martic had met recently at the US Open and it was the Kazakh who had come through in three, tough sets. If that was a gruelling encounter though, her more recent match against Martic, her second round match here at Rome was another level.

And it shouldn’t have been like that.

Putintseva was a set and 5-1 up before Martic came back to draw level in the second set tie-breaker. That would have been morale-shattering for most but the Kazakh held her nerve and made it through in the third set 6-4 to enter round three.

The win came on the back of an easy first round victory for Putintseva where she had beaten Rebecca Peterson in straight sets.

With a quarterfinal at the US Open under her belt, it seems like Putintseva’s confidence on a sky-high and while Rybakina has had her best year so far, this might not be the easiest one for her.

Rybakina v Putintseva Prediction & Tip

It’s a match between Rybakina’s return to confidence and Putintseva’s irresistible form. Another fighting match which we believe will go to the third set, and Rybakina to edge it.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
