Roberto Bautista-Agut v Dominik Koepfer Head to Head
This will be the first time ever that Bautista-Agut and Koepfer will be facing off in a competitive match.

The Spaniard Bautista-Agut had earlier played in the American swing on hard court, reaching the semifinal of the Cincinnati Masters and the third round of the US Open. While he would have been quite chuffed about his wins over Karen Khachanov and Daniil Medvedev, a shock, five-set loss to Vasek Pospisil at Flushing Meadows would have been somewhat deflating.
Coming into this competition after having taken some time off as paternity leave, Bautista-Agut looked sharp as ever in his first match of the season on clay. Playing against the defending champion Nikoloz Basilshvili, the Spaniard wasted no time in registering a 6-4, 6-3 win and moved into the second round.
Bautista-Agut’s performance on clay has been quite restricted though. Traditionally a solid hard-court player, the Spaniard’s only clay court title came in 2014 in Stuttgart, while he has never gotten beyond the fourth round at the French Open earlier. A semifinal at the 2014 Madrid Masters was as far as he got in any of the clay-court Masters.
With his opponent Koepfer having shown some form recently on the same surface, Bautista-Agut could be in for a tough encounter.

Koepfer Achieves Career-Best Ranking
Before the Rome Masters last week, Dominik Koepfer had never played in the main draw of a Masters tournament. He had tried on a couple of occasions but fallen in the qualifiers at Cincinnati earlier this year and Shanghai last season.
At the Italian Open, Koepfer overcame three opponents to make it to the main draw, winning all those matches – including against Gilles Simon and Mikhail Kukushkin – in three sets. And once he got there, Koepfer exhibited fine tennis to get past Alex De Minaur, Gael Monfils and fellow qualifier Lorenzo Musetti to set up a meeting with the world number one Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal.
Now we all know Djokovic went on to win the title, but not before he dropped his only set of the tournament to Koepfer in this match.
Even Djokovic praised Koepfer’s fighting spirit in the encounter and that would be something that keeps him going here too, other than his obvious confidence given he’s playing against the world number 11 but one who isn’t really insurmountable on this surface.

It’s no surprises Bautista-Agut is a favourite but at 1/4 the odds look slightly too short for his win. Expecting Koepfer to win a set here.

I like Koepfer. The German has come from nowhere to play some real entertaining tennis. I’m liking how he talks to himself frequently when he makes errors. Its not a bad thing. I’m tipping him to oust Roberto although it will be tough.
Just has to watch when he comes in for anything short. He barely won a point in his last match when really those points need to be dealt with, without any fuss at all.
