Daniil Medvedev v Marton Fucsovics Head to Head

These two players have featured in three matches before this and Medvedev has won them all. It started with a Challenger in 2016, before a Monte-Carlo Masters meeting in 2018 resulted in a three-setter but with the Russian winning it. Their latest match came in the 2019 Sofia Open, in the title-decider, with Medvedev clinching it in straight sets.

Medvedev Humbled in Hamburg

While Medvedev did make it as far as the semifinal in the US Open, the Russian wasn’t able to carry that form forward on clay. Opting out of the Italian Open, he featured in the Hamburg Open earlier this week but lost in straight sets in the first round.

Ug Humbert clinched a 6-4, 6-3 shock win over Medvedev, leaving him with a lot more questions than answers, coming into the French Open. Making that defeat more difficult to stomach was the fact Medvedev, despite all his excellent form on hard court surfaces, hasn’t done much at Roland-Garros.

In his three appearances at the French Open, Medvedev has been ousted in the first round. Even at the Masters, Medvedev might have made it to the semifinal in Monte-Carlo, but aside from that he has won just one match in those tournaments too.

What could be a slightly bigger worry for Medvedev is the last time he played Fucsovics on clay, the match had gone to a third set with Fucsovics almost taking down the Russian. Big question is whether Medvedev can register his first French Open match win.

Fucsovics Hasn’t Played on Clay This Tournament

On hard courts, Fucsovics has done well this season starting with his appearance at the Qatar Open where he made the quarterfinal. He followed it up with a fourth round at the Australian Open, and later in the US Open he reached the third round.

Even as a qualifier at the Cincinnati Masters, Fucsovics defeated Grigor Dimitrov to make the third round before falling to Filip Krajinovic.

It’s different on clay though. For starters, Fucsovics hasn’t played a single match on that surface this year barring three in an exhibition competition during the pandemic break. Secondly, even in the seasons before this, Fucsovics has had an under-par record – especially compared to hard court surfaces.

Last year, for instance, Fucsovics featured in nine clay court competitions and won two matches in a row in just one. There were four opening round exits to go with it.

On the one hand, clay court rustiness is an issue for Fucsovics, but on the other, he is up against a player who has struggled on this surface too.

Medvedev v Fucsovics Prediction and Tip

Could see a tough battle here with Medvedev expected to come through but not before Fucsovics can notch up a set or two.

Tip: Both Players to Win a Set and Medvedev to Win Match – Yes: 6/4 (bet365)
