Broken Into Top 10, Shapovalov High on Confidence

Denis Shapovalov  broke onto the scene back in 2017, with a semi-final showing at the 2017 Rogers’ Cup with victories over Rafael Nadal, and Juan Martin del Potro. This was followed by a second week showing at the US Open that year with a win over former top ranked Jo-Wilried Tsonga.

The young Canadian has since had an up and down career, some of it due to his young age and relative inexperience.

2020 got off to a good start with wins over Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas at the ATP Cup, but was followed by a disappointing opening round loss to Marton Fucsovics at the Australian Open.

February saw another mix of inconsistent form, and the return to the tour after the Covid-19 related break saw a good start at the Western & Southern Open,  before Shapovalov, lost his way against German Jan-Lennard Struff.

His US Open campaign saw a slow and inconsistent start, but Shapovalov did well to win some key matches against Taylor Fritz and David Goffin, before losing a marathon quarter-final to Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in five sets.

The Canadian’s return to clay last week in Rome, saw him have a good run, making the semi-finals where he recorded promising wins against the likes of Ugo Humbert and Grigor Dimitrov. Shapovalov’s semi-final clash against Diego Schwartzman was one of the matches of the season with plenty of see-saw before the Argentine won a final set tie-break.

Shapovalov has broken into the top ten of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career and he will be looking forward to a good run at the French Open.

How Much Remains in Veteran Simon’s Tank?

Giles Simon has been on the tour for about a decade and a half, been ranked in the top ten of the ATP rankings at a point in time, been the winner of 14 ATP titles and looking to move back up in the ATP rankings. Simon has been a consistent performer on the tour for a considerable period of time and has been intermittently successful in recent times as well.

The Frenchman won two ATP titles in 2018 and was a runner-up to Feliciano Lopez at the Queen’s Club ATP 500 in 2018, and was a regular in the ATP top 50 rankings from 2005-2017, with 2017 being the first year he ended the year ranked outside the top 50.

2020 has been a mixed year for Simon, with a slow start to the year followed by promising showings indoors at Rotterdam and Marseille. His return to the tour this Fall has not been overly impressive, failing to qualify for the Western & Southern Open and the Rome Masters 1000, and registering early losses at the US Open and at Hamburg.

Shapovalov v Simon Prediction and Tip

This should be a more one-sided match than one may think it to be; Shapovalov has been in good form and high on confidence, where as the same cannot be said about Simon. Expect the Canadian to win in straight sets.

Tip: Shapovalov to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
