Jil Teichmann v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players, which Teichmann won in straight sets last year. It had come on the clay court of the WTA Bol, a $125k event where the Swiss player made the quarterfinal.

Teichmann Loves Her Time on Clay

The 54th-ranked Teichmann has won six titles at the ITF level, one at the WTA $125k level and two on the WTA circuit. Of these nine, eight have come on clay. Which is why one look at her record at the French Open, and it comes across as a big surprise the way she has gone so far.

In her three attempts to get going at Roland-Garros, Teichmann has lost in the opening qualifier each time. This, therefore, is the first time she has made the main draw of this tournament and at the same time she would be gunning for her first win.

And given her love for clay and her form coming into this tournament, Teichmann can be expected to do at least that much this time. She was a finalist at the Lexington Open earlier in August, losing to Jennifer Brady in the final, and then made it as far as the quarterfinal at Strasbourg on clay.

While the opening round defeat at the US Open and Rome will hurt, it can be put down to one of those things that happen. Because for the 2019 Prague and Palermo winner, she would know this is a good chance to make it to the second round of a Grand Slam for only the second time in her career.

Begu Could Put up a Fight

30-year-old Begu has been around for a while, has the experience of playing on clay and dished out her best Grand Slam performance on these courts of Roland-Garros.

Agreed that her fourth round showing at the French Open came in 2016, but even with a drop in her rankings Begu has managed a third round here in each of the past two seasons.

A two-time quarterfinalist at the Madrid Open, a semifinalist at the Italian Open and having won the 2017 Bucharest Open on clay – incidentally her last WTA title – make her a very formidable opponent going into this opening round clash.

In more recent times, Begu has made the semifinal of the Prague Open, before losing to countrywoman Simona Halep, and qualified for the Italian Open before bowing out in the second round. An interesting contest in the offing.

Teichmann v Begu Prediction and Tip

Teichmann is 4/6 to win this but we think there’s not much to choose between the two and this could get very close. A three-setter looks likely.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
