Amanda Anisimova v Tamara Korpatsch Head to Head

This will be the first match between Anisimova and Korpatsch in their careers.

Anisimova Looks to Regain Clay Control

Till 2017, Anisimova was playing at the ITF tier and while she made the switch up to the main tour in 2018, she opted not to play in any clay court competitions that season.

It was 2019 which became Anisimova’s first ever full clay court season and she surprised a lot of opponents and fans alike with her display. For starters she won her maiden – and only so far – WTA title when she lifted the Bogota Open trophy in April 2019, defeating Astra Sharma in the final.

As a qualifier she made the second round at the Italian Open before making the world sit up and take notice at the French Open. Because it was at the previous edition of the Roland-Garros competition that Anisimova delivered her best performance till date.

With wins over Aryna Sabalenka, Irina Begu and Simona Halep, Anisimova reached the semifinal before losing in three tight sets to the eventual winner Ash Barty. Which is why her showing this year has left many surprised.

The pandemic has made it tougher for most players to get their practice in, but a second round defeat at the Italian Open and an opening loss at the Strasbourg Open means Anisimova will need to get to the drawing board to get back to her winning ways. An easy opener should help.

Korpatsch Hasn’t Won a Main Draw Match This Year

It was Naomi Osaka’s withdrawal from this year’s French Open that allowed the 123rd-ranked Korpatsch to make it to the main draw because otherwise she would have had to go through the qualifiers. And given her record this year, that might not have been an easy task.

Other than a string of wins during the pandemic break in an exhibition tournament back home in Germany, Korpatsch hasn’t won a single main draw match in 2020. Neither on the ITF circuit, nor at the WTA level.

At the first three ITF competitions of the season, Korpatsch lost in the first round, and then at the Lyon Open she failed to win her first qualifying round either. Following the resumption, she participated at the WTA Prague where she went down in the final qualifier before a first round loss at the US Open to Cici Bellis left her with a few question-marks on this.

This will be her first time in the French Open main draw, but given her recent form it’s tough to see how she can overturn a top-30 player in this opener.

Anisimova v Korpatsch Prediction and Tip

Anisimova should go through as an easy winner here, and in straight sets with a caveat that Korpatsch had earlier pushed Bellis to three sets in the US Open opener.

Tip: Anisimova to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
