Expectations High from Fast-Improving Humbert

It’s been a decent couple of years for France’s up and coming star Ugo Humbert. Ever since breaking into the top 100 in 2018, the lefty has just continued impressing.

The 22-year-old reached the fourth round of the Wimbledon in his first main draw appearance in the tournament last year, defeating 16th seed Gael Monfils and 19th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first and third rounds respectively. He was eventually defeated by Novak Djokovic in the Round of 16.

The Frenchman continued showing signs of improvement by reaching the semifinals in Newport and Antwerp in 2019, however, his biggest achievement came at the start of this year, when he captured his maiden title in Auckland.

Beginning the tournament with a three-set win over Casper Ruud, Humbert went on to defeat Marco Cecchinato, second-seed Denis Shapovalov and fourth-seed John Isner in straight sets to set-up a title clash with compatriot Benoit Paire. Humbert prevailed in a dramatic three-set final to win the ATP 250 event.

The Auckland triumph was followed by a first round exit from the Australian Open, but Humbert quickly put that behind to reach the quarterfinals of the New York Open and the semifinals at Delray Beach.

Since the restart of tennis after the break due to the coronavirus pandemic, Humbert didn’t get much success on the hard courts in New York, but has looked in decent touch on his preferred clay surface. He reached the third round of the Italian Open by beating Kevin Anderson and seventh seed Fabio Fognini, but fell to Shapovalov in the third round.

At the German Open, Humbert got his first top 10 victory, when he defeated top seed Daniil Medvedev in the Round of 32. His run, however, came to an end in the quarterfinal after he was sent packing by Casper Ruud.

A string of good performances in the lead-up to the French Open has increased expectations from the young Frenchman, who is 15-9 this year and will be desperate to register his first main draw win at Roland Garros having exited the tournament in the first round on his main draw debut last year.

Lucky Polmans To Make Main Draw Debut at Roland Garros

Marc Polmans will make his main draw debut at the French Open against Humbert after the Aussie received a lucky loser spot in the tournament.

The 23-year-old, ranked 122nd in the world, defeated Germany’s Tobias Kamke in the first round of qualifying and Italy’s Allessandro Giannessi in the second round, before falling to Britain’s Liam Broady in the third round of qualifiers. But a number of pullouts opened slots for lucky losers and Polmans was fortunate enough to get one of those spots.

A winner of three Challenger Tour titles, Polmans has a 2-6 career win-loss record and is 1-2 in 2020, having defeated Mikhail Kukushkin in the first round of the Australian Open earlier this year.

Humbert v Polamans Prediction and Tip

Expect the in-form Humbert to dominate this contest and win in straight sets.

Tip: Humbert to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
