Cori Gauff v Martina Trevisan Head to Head
Gauff and world number 159 Trevisan have never played each other in a competitive match before this.

Gauff Stuns Konta in Opener
Okay, we should probably stop using the word ‘stun’ or any such-meaning one with Gauff because she has done it so many times and she is only 16. In fact, she is one solid tournament result away from belonging in the top-20 ranking bracket and it wouldn’t remain a shock result anyway if she beats most of those fellow top-20 players.
And yet, Gauff is still 51st in the world, had never qualified for the French Open before this and went on to crush a ninth seed in straight sets in the first round despite having played just two previous matches on clay this year.
It was stunning alright!
This was after Gauff served a whopping 12 double-faults over the two sets, average of 1.25 a service game. The winners were also conspicuous by their absence.
What she missed out with those two stats, Gauff made up with hitting 15 lesser unforced errors than her opponents as she adjusted to the cold conditions better than her British opponent.
She was far more clinical on her serve in the first set, winning it with one early break that helped to take a 3-0 lead but thing began to unravel quickly for both players in the second. Konta got the early break, Gauff levelled things at 2-2 and then went 5-2 ahead with two more breaks of serve, only to be broken back.
However, serving to stay in the match at 3-5, Konta was unable to hold on and went down in straight sets.
Gauff had earlier defeated Ons Jabeur in the first round at the Italian Open before putting up a very strong show against Garbine Muguruza in the second but going down in three.

Qualifier Trevisan Benefits from Giorgi Injury
Italy’s Trevisan had made it to the main draw on the back of three qualifying wins but the 26-year-old has never seen the inside of the top 140 on the WTA rankings. Going into her opening round match against Camila Giorgi, she had not even won a Grand Slam main draw match and before this season, forget winning a match, Trevisan had not even made the main draw.
Which is why when she was broken twice in the first set, and fell 5-1 behind to the experienced Giorgi, not too many would have been surprised. But then, Giorgi began to lose steam, and a few games at first before falling behind 3-0 in the second set having lost the first 7-5.
Yep, Trevisan had managed to pocket nine games in a row against an opponent nearly 70 places above her, in just her second Grand Slam main draw match. And while a later retirement from Giorgi indicated she had begun struggling with her injury way before she decided to withdraw from the encounter, Trevisan would take that with both hands, an extra €24,000 in prize money never hurt anyone, let along a player whose career earnings over 12 years is less than $400,000.
Trevisan is a clay-court specialist, having reached 16 ITF level finals, all of which have come on that surface. She has nine such title wins too, with the last one having come about a year ago in Pula, Italy.
Can she pull off something special against Gauff?
Gauff v Trevisan Prediction and Tip
As far as favourites go, it’s the first time this season Gauff starts off as such a heavy one, with bet365 offering 1/3 for her victory. She is up against a clay-courter though, so that might push the needle in her opponent’s favour just a little bit. Expect a straight-set win but at the same time one in which she could be stretched.
Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 8/11 (bet365)
