Kiki Bertens v Sara Errani Head to Head
Bertens and Errani have played five times between 2011 and 2016 and the Italian has won each time. Those were better days for Errani though, when she was still on the top of her game, before things took a turn for the worse. Two of these five matches came on clay as well, where Errani hasn’t dropped a set.

Bizarre Win for Bertens First Up
Bertens has been in bit of a struggle since tennis went into a lockdown, having not won much. In fact, coming into this French Open, the Dutchwoman had recorded her last win in the last week of February, and that includes a couple of exhibition competitions as well.
Defeats to Petra Kvitova and Anastasija Sevastova in those exhibitions, followed by first round ousters at Rome and Strasbourg on clay meant Bertens was still groping for her first win.
And when she fell 6-2 in the first set to the 112th-ranked Katarina Zavatska, a shock loss seemed to be on the cards. Fortunately for Bertens, there was enough fight left in her legs, as she slowly worked her way back into rhythm and levelled the match with a 6-2 scoreline in the second set.
Her opponent’s issues came to the fore when she had to play with a tennis racquet which wasn’t hers after snapping a few strings. Bertens, by then, had taken full control of the match and with the opponent’s morale shattered, she moved in to complete a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Bertens, however, will need to do a lot better than this against an opponent who might not be at her peak but has been creeping up with a few wins here and there.

Errani’s Sole Focus is Clay
Before the pandemic break, Errani featured in a few tournaments on hard court surfaces but never made beyond the second round of any. Post the break, however, she seems to have taken a conscious decision to stick to her strengths and play on clay.
As a result, a quarterfinal at the Palermo Open and a second round at the Prague Open have helped her garner a few points as she inches her way back into the top 100 – she is currently 150th from her season low of 194th in the world.
A win in the first round here would help in that endeavour too. A former finalist at the French Open, Errani had to go through the qualifiers at the competition this season, and did that with aplomb – winning all three matches in straight sets.
And while she was fortunate not to face a high seeded player first up in the competition, Errani did what was best expected out of her. She completed a 6-2, 6-1 rout of the former Olympics gold medallist Monica Puig to move into this second round.
While Bertens would be a tough cookie, her form could give Errani a chance here.
Bertens v Errani Prediction and Tip
Bertens starts off at 1/3 but given her form, those are far too short odds. Expecting Errani to win a set here.
Tip: Errani to win a set – Yes: 5/6 (bet365)
