Kaja Juvan v Clara Burel Head to Head

This will be the first ever meeting between the 103rd-ranked Juvan and Burel, who is ranked 357th in the world.

Juvan Kills off Kerber Chances

Juvan’s steady rise as a talented teenager had so far gone unnoticed but a shock win over the former world number one Angelique Kerber will go a long way in changing things around for her. What might also help is if she can get past her wild-card opponent, a fellow teenager, and make it to her maiden third round place in a Grand Slam.

Before this, Juvan, who first featured in a Grand Slam at the 2019 Australian Open only to be knocked out in the qualifiers, has already made four main draws, including two appearances in the second round before this tournament.

At the 2019 Wimbledon, Juvan had beaten Kristyna Pliskova in round one and then famously taken a set off Serena Williams in the second round. She then went on to make it to the second round at the US Open earlier this month but failed to make it past round one in the two clay-court tournaments she played before the French Open.

Juvan’s best showing on clay came earlier last month at the Palermo Open where, as a qualifier, she defeated the 2019 French Open runnerup Marketa Vondrousova in the first round. And now, with a 6-3, 6-3 rout of Kerber, Juvan has given herself an excellent chance of going the distance given only one seeded player is left in her section of the draw, Petra Kvitova whom she might face in round four if things go to plan.

Burel Catapults up to 357th

Not too long ago, in this very season, Clara Burel was ranked 782nd in the world. A string of solid performances in the ITF circuit have pushed right up to 357th at the moment and with at least a second round showing here at the French Open, Burel can be guaranteed a further jump.

A two-time junior Grand Slam runnerup, Burel had to overturn the loss of the first set and a break in the second to clinch a hard-fought three-set win over Arantxa Rus.

Burel had her chances even in the first set, as she raced off to a 5-2 lead with two breaks of serve. As it turned out, she found it difficult to hold on to the serve, losing the next three games in a row, and then blew away a 5-2 lead in the tie-breaker to lose 9-7.

Anyone with such little experience might have felt deflated but Burel refused to go away. She overturned the early break in the second set, went 4-2 ahead, was then broken twice to face Rus serving for her match. Burel broke back at 6-5 and went on win the tie-breaker, levelling things out.

The final set turned out to be a break-a-thon. Of the nine games played in that set, a total of six breaks of serves occurred with Burel cashing in on four of them and winning her first ever main draw match at a Grand Slam.

Juvan v Burel Prediction and Tip

Juvan, despite being ranked outside the top 100 is 1/4 to win this match but the maturity of Burel was there for all to see in round one. Can expect a hard-fought battle here as well, which goes to the third set – but a good market to consider is the games market.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 4/5 (bet365)
