Isner Cruises in First Clay Match This Year

It’s been a strange sort of a year for the tennis calendar for obvious reasons and it wouldn’t be that big of a surprise that players like John Isner haven’t played too many matches on clay. In fact, Isner was playing his first on the surface in round one of the French Open and some amount of rustiness was always expected from the American big-server.

Except, he showed none of it in his opener against Elliot Benchetrit, beating him 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the second round.

Isner faced a mere four break points in the entire match on a surface that isn’t his most favourite and saved all of them. In turn he broke his opponent’s serve five times of the seven opportunities he got to breeze into round two.

The American, who has never made it past the fourth round at the French Open, had last played on clay at this very competition in 2018 where he went out in straight sets to Juan Martin del Potro. For him to return to the same competition and deliver such a comprehensive win speaks volumes about his confidence here.

Qualifier Korda Sends out Seppi

It was interesting to note Sebastian Korda started off a favourite in his first round match against Andreas Seppi, despite being ranked outside the top 200 on the ATP charts. And he played like one too, winning his opening match at the French Open in four sets.

Korda, a winner of the junior’s Australian Open in 2018, had never made it past the first round of a senior’s Grand Slam before this. That’s also because there had been only one main draw appearance for him in majors so far – it came at the US Open last month – but he does have five Challenger and Futures finals under his belt.

While he is yet to win a title at any level, the biggest question-marks are around his performance on clay – Korda is a hard-court specialist and his own performance of note on clay is a doubles runner-up at the Indian Wells Challenger earlier this year.

The good news for Korda, whose dad Petr had once reached the French Open singles and doubles final, is his opponent isn’t very well-known for his clay performances. The not so good news is Isner has still found a way to do reasonably well at Roland-Garros.

Isner v Korda Prediction and Tip

Isner is 4/9 to win this and 2/1 to do that in straight sets but we think there’s a set at the very least in there somewhere for Korda.

Tip: Isner to win AND Both Players to win a set: 6/4 (bet365)
