Denis Shapovalov v Roberto Carballés Baena Head to Head
This will be the first ever meeting between Shapovalov and Carballes Baena at this competitive level.

Shapovalov Carves out a Four-Set Win over Simon
It was a tough first round battle between Shapovalov and French veteran Gilles Simon managed to put a stick into the smooth-sailing Canadian’s attempts to carve out a straight-set victory in his opener.
While the first set was mostly one-way traffic in favour of Shapovalov, things could have panned out quite differently had Simon managed to take advantage of the 5-2 lead he had conjured up in the second set of the match.
Simon had five set-points on serve but failed to capitalise as Shapovalov broke the Frenchman back twice in successive to clinch the set. Interestingly, despite this obvious capitulation and having gone down an early break in the third set, Simon wasn’t done fighting as it was his turn to register a couple of breaks and make a surprise comeback.
The fourth, and what turned out to the final set, saw a clutch of poor service games from both players and a total of six breaks of serves including four in favour of Shapovalov sealed a second round place for the Canadian.
The Rome Masters semifinalist will hope for an easier passage to the third round when he takes on Carballes Baena next.

Carballés Baena Registers the Easiest Win of the Round
Not even Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal managed a win as straightforward as Carballes Baena did in his opening match. In an encounter that lasted an hour and 23 minutes – shorter than most best-of-three matches in the women’s draw – Carballes Baena made a resounding start to the French Open with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 victory over American Steve Johnson.
Now Carballes Baena is a clay-court specialist, as can be seen from the fact that before the US Open he last played a hard court tournament at the Australian Open in January. Three ATP tournaments on clay, followed by two exhibition competitions, two Challengers post the break and the Rome Masters – that’s what he has done since the year’s first Grand Slam.
Not to mention the 28 clay court finals at the lower circuit in his career, of which he has won 16.
Not that Carballes Baena’s form has been with him this season, with a quarterfinal at the Bendigo Challenger on hard court surface being his top showing.
Having made the French Open second round only once before this, Carballes Baena will hope against hope he can find himself a way to break through Shapovalov’s defences but it’s going to be as difficult as it was to believe he would drop just two games in his opener.
Shapovalov v Carballés Baena Prediction and Tip
A Shapovalov win is at 1/6, a straight-set win is 1/1 and we would like to believe he has that chance of making it through without any worries. Or go for a slightly less risky games market.
Tip: Under 34.5 games in the match: 4/5 (bet365)
