Simona Halep v Amanda Anisimova Head to Head
These two have met just once before this and that came in the quarterfinals of the previous year’s French Open. Halep had gone into the encounter as a favourite but Anisimova surprised her in straight sets to make it to her first ever major semifinal.

Halep Broken Twice, Still Wins Easily
The world number two registered here 16th successive win of the season and she did that by beating fellow countrywoman Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets in her second round match.
Halep, who had wasted no time in getting past Sara Sorribes Tormo in the first round of the competition, was on court for a little less than an hour and 30 minutes for her second round encounter against Begu before winning 6-3, 6-4. And it wasn’t the most perfect performance from the top seed but to still come through with that much ease speaks volumes of the levels she is playing at right now.
In the first set, Halep drew first blood by getting a break in the very second game but Begu came back to first save a break-point and then break the world number two in the seventh game. Not to be outdone, Halep then won two games in a row to wrap up the set.
The script didn’t change too much in the second set when Halep and Begu exchanged breaks of serve before a decisive break came in the ninth game of the set for Halep. She held on to make it to the third round, making it 12 victories in a row on clay.
Halep has also lost just one set over the last 10 matches but now faces a tougher challenge in the form of a former vanquisher of hers.

Imperious Anisimova’s Dropped Four Games in Two Matches
Anisimova’s form coming into this year’s French Open hasn’t been anything to laud about. Her best showing following the break for the pandemic came at the US Open where she reached the third round but on clay she lost in the second round at Rome (a tight three-setter at that to Dayana Yastremska) and then in the first round at Strasbourg.
So when she came into her first round match against Tamara Korpasch and then faced Bernarda Pera in the second, there was always that niggling worry things might not quite go her way despite the gulf in the rankings. We had backed Anisimova to win in both those matches (here & here) but it went without saying the American needed to get some of her confidence back.
She looks to have done that.
Keeping in mind Anisimova would be playing arguably the world’s best female tennis player at the moment, she needed to come through having dictated terms to her opponents in the first two rounds.
She looks to have done that too.
With identical scores of 6-2, 6-0, Anisimova defeated both Korpasch and Pera to seal her place in the third round and while there’s every chance Halep’s form would be too much for her to handle, the American gives herself a chance.
Halep v Anisimova Prediction and Tip
Despite Anisimova’s solidity over her previous two rounds, bookmakers are having none of it. Anisimova starts at 3/1 to win this while Halep is a rather short 1/5. We think while stopping Halep is going to be a difficult task, Anisimova might spring in a few surprises to push the Romanian.
Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
