Taylor Fritz v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head
This will be the second meeting between both players on the ATP tour. Their previous meeting was the Wimbledon opener in 2018, which Fritz won comfortably.

Although only 22 years of age, American Taylor Fritz has been on the tour of while and is currently ranked just outside the top 25 in the world. The last year has been good for Fritz, winning his first ever title at Eastbourne last year and being in good touch prior to the pandemic break for the tour.
With others of his era breaking through at majors and making week two and better, the American will be looking for the same.
Ever since Fritz lost control of the match against Denis Shapovalov at the US Open where he let go on an imminent victory, he has not been the same player especially losing early on clay at both Rome and Hamburg, leaving doubts on what to expect at Roland Garros.
The American was up two sets to love in his opener against little known Czech Tomas Machac, but then let go of the advantage, only to close the match in a deciding set.
After two tight sets, Fritz let go of the tight play with two poor sets before he put it together to win in a decider. His next match against Moldovian Radu Albot, saw him in much more consistent form and was able to win convincingly in straight sets.
Radu Albot is no easy opponent and this win should give Fritz confidence going into his next round. The big serve and strong shot making came in handy during the fifth set of the opener and saw him through against Albot.

In-Form Sonego Aiming for Week 2
Italian Lorenzo Sonego is clay court specialist who displayed his baseline skills and moved up the rankings in 2019. Incidentally his only title thus far came on the grass courts of Antalya. 2020 has not been the best for him with his only notable performances coming on the clay courts of Rio and exhibition events in Italy during the Covid-19 hiatus.
After a listless hard court swing at the Western & Southern Open and the US Open, Sonego was inconsistent on the clay courts of Rome and Hamburg, coming into the French Open with less than ideal preparation.
He was up first against qualifier Emilio Gomez who is the son of 1990 French Open winner Andrez Gomez. What should have been a routine match ended up in a decider with Sonego prevailing. This was evidence that even on clay, the Italian was lacking in belief and was the underdog in the second round against Alexander Bublik who had just dethroned Gael Monfils.
Sonego put up a clinical display dispatching Bublik in straight sets with great ground-strokes, efficient serving and gaining in confidence as he went through the match. Although he is yet to exhibit consistency of the sort he did in 2019, this win is an excellent sign for Sonego going into the third round.
Fritz v Sonego Prediction and Tip
Both players have had an up and down year and season, with reaching some unexpected favorable outcomes, but at the same time coupled with disappointing and even shocking losses. This week both have had moments of looking in control and looking out of rhythm. Both players will be looking to play percentage tennis at the onset, looking to gain early advantage in the match.
It is difficult to pick a winner but it can be a close one; a five set match awaits us.
