Alexander Zverev v Marco Cecchinato Head to Head
There has been one previous meeting between Zverev and Cecchinato which came as recently as the 2020 Australian Open. Zverev won that opening round encounter in straight sets.

It was expected to be easier than it got in the end but Zverev came through in his second round match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, winning 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4.
Herbert ran away with two breaks of serve in the first set to close it out 6-2, and when he led 4-2 in the second, the script looked to be going against Zverev. The US Open runner-up fought back to break his opponent twice and pouch it 6-4 before saving a couple of set-points in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
Not to be outdone, Herbert broke Zverev twice in the fourth to push the match into a decider where both players dropped their serves twice apiece including once when the German was serving for the match at 5-3. Zverev overcame the disappointment and broke Herbert right back to win the match.
Zverev looks to be making this bit of a habit these days; playing five-setters against opponents he is supposed to ease past. At the US Open too, he needed five sets to get past Pablo Carreno Busta, having fallen behind by two sets to love.
To be fair though, there is a second way of looking at it and that’s the confidence he has to overturn adversity and win ugly, win whatever it takes. That will hold him in a good stead not just in these early rounds but even against tougher opponents, especially if he is allowed an inch.

Signs of a Cecchinato Turnaround
A semifinalist at the 2018 French Open, Cecchinato went on a free-fall after that run which had seen him beat Pablo Carreno Busta, David Goffin and Novak Djokovic.
Between that successful campaign and the start of this edition of the French Open, Cecchinato featured in eight Grand Slams and lost in the opening round of each of them. There were the odd sparks of form resurgence, a third round appearance at the Shanghai Masters in 2018, and a couple of such showings at the Miami Open and Monte-Carlo Masters in 2019, but other than a title win at the Argentina Open last year, Cecchinato’s form fell away drastically.
Which is why a third round here at the French Open will not be a chance for him to return back to the top 100 of the rankings but also provide him with a great relief.
Needing to qualify for the main draw here, Cecchinato has already beaten Alex de Minaur in straight sets in the first round and then overcame Juan Londero in the second round.
Zverev v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip
Zverev has gotten to the quarterfinal of the French Open past two seasons and a win here looks likely given his form and fighting ability.
