Diego Schwartzman v Norbert Gombos Head to Head

There have been no previous meetings between Schwartzman and Gombos at any level.

Schwartzman’s Pushed Early Kitzbuhel Loss Behind

Clay is undoubtedly Schwartzman’s most preferred surface and so when he was ousted in the second round of the Kitzbuhel Open immediately after the US Open ended, he would have been stunned. Having won titles on clay in his career, Schwartzman would have believed he had a chance to add to that in a depleted field in that tournament after all.

His comeback in Rome was spectacular in nature though, with the Argentine reaching the final on the back of wins over Herbert Hurkacz, Rafael Nadal and Denis Shapovalov. While he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final, the result had done enough to boost his morale following the lows of the Kitzbuhel effort and he has now come into the French Open with that same solidified confidence.

Drawn to face Miomir Kecmanovic – the winner of that same Kitzbuhel Open – in the first round, there were a few who thought it could end up to being a ripping contest.

It didn’t.

Schwartzman’s aggression proved to be too much for Kecmanovic as he dropped a mere four games across the match to move to round two. And then defeated the Italian Lorenzo Giustino in the second round, also in straight sets to set up a third round meeting with Norbert Gombos.

Before this, the Argentine has only made the fourth round at Roland-Garros once – in 2018 when he entered the quarterfinal too. Now it’s his chance to go deeper, in a draw which could have him Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals.

Tale of Two Parts for Gombos

Slovakia’s Gombos has been around for over a decade featuring in the lower circuit of competitions, winning a total of 10 Challengers and Futures tournaments and being a runner-up 14 times. In all these leading up to the 2020, Gombos had never won an ATP title or won a main draw match at a Grand Slam.

This year he has managed to do that at a couple of majors.

Gombos won his first match in a Grand Slam at the Australian Open, registering is best ever showing at the competition by reaching the second round. And here at the French Open, the 30-year-old has done one better – winning two matches and reaching round three.

The Slovak stunned Borna Coric in the first round, winning it in four sets and then registered a four-set win in the second round against the 21-year-old Jurij Rodionov. While his third round opponent will raise the quality of play by a few notches, the fact is he has already surpassed his best showing by some.
