Stan Wawrinka v Hugo Gaston Head to Head

This will be the first match between Wawrinka and Gaston.

Wawrinka Sees off the Koepfer Challenge

After a clinical first round showing against Andy Murray, Wawrinka was a huge favourite going up against the 61st-ranked Dominik Koepfer. And for the first couple of sets it looked like that too, as the three-time Grand Slam winner eased past his opponent.

In the third, however, Koepfer showed why the 26-year-old is so highly rated by experts as he bounced back to break Wawrinka in the eighth game and then served it out – upsetting the apple-cart which looked to be going so well for the Swiss number two. Wawrinka did not have much trouble after that though as he closed out the match in the fourth set and set up this third round meeting with Gaston.

The biggest advantage Wawrinka has over most of his opponents coming into this tournament is his decision to play on clay all the time leading up to the French Open.

Wawrinka opted out of the hard court swing in America, featuring in a couple of Challengers and the Rome Masters and while he was knocked out of the latter in the first round, the entire experience seems to have worked wonderfully for him.

Gaston Makes Shock Third Round Appearance

To an extent, Gaston would have been pleased with his draw, having rolled up against a fellow French wildcard in the first round and then facing Yoshihito Nishioka in the second. The former, a 204th-ranked player on the circuit, was on a four-match losing streak and fell in straight sets, the latter hasn’t been known for his prowess on clay and fell in four to the French Open debutant, Gaston.

Interestingly, as a former Australian Open junior doubles winner in 2018, Gaston got a wildcard to feature at the Australian Open earlier this year where he managed to take a set off Jaume Munar in the opening round before going out.

Since then Gaston’s journey has mostly been on the Challenger tour, making it to the semifinal at the Bergamo Challenger, and doing well in a couple of competitions during the pandemic break. Coming into this French Open though, Gaston was struggling to get going on the Challenger tour again, winning just two of his six matches.

And here he is, waiting to play one of the best players in the world in the third round of his home Grand Slam.

Wawrinka v Gaston Prediction and Tip

This is where Gaston’s journey can be expected to end given the kind of form that Wawrinka has shown over the past couple of matches. The Swiss starts off 1/20 to clinch this and 4/9 in straight sets but more vitally we think Gaston’s nimbleness might help him stretch his opponent here.

Tip: Gaston to win a set – Yes: 13/8 (bet365)
