Andrey Rublev and Daniel Altmaier became the first two names on the day to reach the fourth round of the 2020 French Open on Saturday, October 3 as they sealed off straight-set wins over their respective men’s singles opponents.

Rublev, who had come into the French Open with a Hamburg Open title under his belt only last week, wasted no time in getting the better of former Grand Slam finalist 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.

On the other hand, Germany’s Altmaier wasn’t even sure till about a week ago he was going to be playing at the competition because of his fitness issues but has now come through against the seventh seeded Matteo Berrettini. He won 6-2, 7-6, 6-4.

Rublev, seeded 13th in the tournament, proved to be too strong for Anderson as he broke the South African five times in the match without getting broken even once in return.

It started with Rublev taking a 2-0 lead in the first set and sealing the set off with that solitary break of serve and repeating the same in the second set with an early break. Another break of serve followed to seal off the set and the whole procedure was repeated twice in the third set as well.

On the other hand, Italy’s Berrettini, who was one of the favourites to go deeper into the competition, was left with more questions than answers after going down to the little known Altmaier, losing 2-6, 6-7, 4-6.

In a match that last two hours and a quarter, it was the German’s better ratio of winners and unforced errors (23-21 to his opponent’s 34-42) helped him breeze past his opponent.

Rublev will now take on the winner of the match between Marton Fucosvics and Thiago Monteiro, while Altmaier will play one of the Spaniards, Roberto Bautista Agut or Pablo Carreno Busta.
