In the women’s section of the draw, the ousters of Simona Halep and Karolina Pliskova, the fitness-related retirement of Serena Williams and the earlier pull-out of the likes of Ash Barty and Naomi Osaka has opened the draw up considerably.
Among those who have made it to the quarterfinals so far, Elina Svitolina, the third seed looks like she has a bright chance of going the distance while Iga Swiatek has shot herself into contention with her drubbing of Simona Halep.
Four other fourth round matches are pending, which are being played on Monday at the time of writing, and which will decide the remaining two quarterfinal matches.

Rafael Nadal, the second seed is through to the men’s quarterfinal already and he will be one of the favourites to clinch the title, his 13th at Roland Garros. Joining him in the quarters is the third seed and US Open winner Dominic Thiem.
Novak Djokovic also made it through and is currently the bookmaker’ favourite to go the distance, with Stefanos Tsitsipas still remaining the dark horse following the ouster of Alexander Zverev.

Elina Svitolina [3] v [Q] Nadia Podoroska
Who would have thought that the Argentinian qualifier Nadia Podoroska would make it all the way through to the quarterfinal but she will now be up against a player who is coming off a title win at a WTA event last week. She is the highest seed remaining too, is Svitolina, and with a stunning take-down of Caroline Garcia in the fourth round will be a heavy favourite to win this one.

Iga Swiatek v [Q] Martina Trevisan
We will be honest, we thought Simona Halep would win her fourth round match against Iga Swiatek easily, despite the latter’s obvious sparkle. Swiatek had other ideas as she blitzed past Halep like she was in a terrible hurry and will now take on another qualifier, Martina Trevisan in the quarterfinal. Trevisan has already beaten Cori Gauff, Maria Sakkari and Kiki Berten though…

[2] Rafael Nadal v Jannik Sinner
Rafael Nadal might be second to Novak Djokovic as far as the bookmakers’ outright odds are concerned, but coming into this match, he has looked close to invincible so far. Sure, he hasn’t played a seeded player so far and his last match was against Sebastian Korda, a player ranked outside the top 200 but that doesn’t take away from the manner in which he downed the American and marched here. Sinner could provide him his first real test but the Spaniard should come through.

[3] Dominic Thiem v [12] Diego Schwartzman
A match between equals, somewhat. Dominic Thiem has done a lot on clay to deserve a French Open title according to some but Diego Schwartzman is in the kind of form that has already taken the scalp of Rafael Nadal at the Rome Masters and gotten through all his matches here in a jiffy. Thiem could well be in for a slug-fest here.

[5] Stefanos Tsitsipas v [13] Andrey Rublev
A repeat of the Hamburg Open final which had seen Andrey Rublev defeat Stefanos Tsitsipas recently. This time around, it’s a best-of-five match and Tsitsipas looks like he has turned things around after an underwhelming first round match. Rublev hasn’t done much to disprove the theory he could soon be challenging the big-shots for major titles which means this could be another ripper.

[7] Petra Kvitova v Laura Siegemund
Petra Kvitova is yet to drop a set in the tournament and is coming off a breezy win over Shuai Zhan while Laura Siegemund has surprised a few so far, including Kristina Mladenovic, Julia Goerges and Petra Martic before getting past Paula Badosa last round. While this is the first time Siegemund has gotten to the quarterfinal of a major, Kvitova isn’t quite as comfortable on the French clay as she has been at the other majors, still making the semis once.

[1] Novak Djokovic v Pablo Carreno Busta
It has been a runaway form for Djokovic so far as he registered another straight-set victory in his fourth round match against Karen Khachanov. And he now faces the only player to have ‘beaten’ him this season, Pablo Carreno Busta, with revenge on his mind. Busta has himself been in some form, and will take heart from the fact he had stretched Djokovic once on clay at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

[4] Sofia Kenin v Danielle Collins
Americans Sofia Kenin and Danielle Collins will clash in this quarterfinal match in what will be their fourth meeting with each other. Stunningly, the unseeded Collins has beaten Kenin on all three of the previous occasions. Both players will be gunning for their second Grand Slam semifinal though and the match could end up being a lot closer than one thinks given the disparity in their rankings.
