Sofia Kenin v Danielle Collins Head to Head
This will be the fourth time these two players will be facing off in a competitive encounter. Two of their previous three came at the ITF level, in 2017, and the third was hosted earlier this year at the Adelaide International with Collins beating Kenin in all three in straight sets. Interestingly, after that defeat to Collins in 2020, Kenin went on a seven-match winning streak to lift the Australian Open title.

Kenin Continues Amazing Grand Slam Run
A winner at the Australian Open, fourth round at the US Open and now, a quarterfinalist at the French Open – and still going – it has been a brilliant run of form for Kenin in 2020. Clay hasn’t been Kenin’s most preferred surface with none of her six finals in WTA events having come on this surface but what we have seen at this French Open has been a different side to Kenin.
She has been pushed to three sets in three of her four wins and has been down a set to begin with in a couple of them but the fighting spirit has never dimmed. Kenin has played like a champion wanting to overturn some of her off-colour moments on the court, and the latest example of that was on display against Frenchwoman Fiona Ferro.
After losing the first set 6-2, despite getting the early break, Kenin didn’t look she was prepared to throw in the towel. She started off with a break in the opening game of the first set, and while Ferro broke back, Kenin made it two more breaks of serve to clinch the second set with ease.
And before her opponent knew it, Kenin had raced off to a 3-0 lead with two breaks of serve in the third set and closed it out with a third at 5-1. What’s interesting to note is Kenin is yet to play a seeded player in the tournament so far and in her next opponent, isn’t facing one either.

Collins Jogs Past Jabeur
Who would have seen this coming? Collins, who just got herself a coach about a week or so ago, had never gotten past the second round at Roland-Garros before this. Having never won anything better than the Newport Challenger competition, which also came on a hard court surface, her best showing at the Madrid Open/Italian Open combination has been the second round.
All of a sudden, she finds herself in the quarterfinal, pitted against a fellow countrywoman and a player whom she has never dropped a set against.
Collins, who had stunned Garbine Muguruza in the third round, came through in three sets against Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the fourth round, but later admitted she lost her way during the match when she could have finished off the match in straight sets.
Leading 6-4, 3-0, Collins lost five games on the bounce as Jabeur began to change her game around a bit, playing drop shots at what her opponent termed as unexpected times.
Things got tougher when Collins failed to retain serve in the first and third game of the final set, but had the tenacity to break and level things each time. Things came to a head when Collins then got ahead with a break of serve but then dropped her own serve before Jabeur levelled at 4-4.
Serving to stay in the match, Jabeur forged ahead 30-15 but lost three points in a row as a rather elated Collins fell to the court before rushing to congratulate her opponent.
Kenin v Collins Prediction and Tip
By the dint of her higher ranking, Kenin starts off as a favourite but Collins has given enough evidence to show she would be no pushover, especially against an opponent she has bit of a mental edge and one who has struggled to get going. A three-setter looks likely here given Collins run of form and Kenin’s fighting spirit.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
