Auger-Aliassime Progresses after Comfortable Opener

Having been given a bye in the first round, Auger-Aliassime was well rested before Thursday’s match with Swiss qualifier Henri Laaksonen, having not played since being knocked-out of the French Open in the first round by Yoshido Nishioka of Japan.

The first set was even and went with serve until the tenth game when, having seen two break points saved, the young Canadian was able to convert the third to establish the advantage.

The second set was much more comfortable. Auger-Aliassime broke the Swiss early, and then again four games later, eventually taking the set 6 -1. The match lasted just an hour and 18 minutes, and had served as a useful warm-up for the Canadian.

He did not drop his serve all match, and converted two out of the three break points he engineered.

Albot Dishes Out His Best Performance For a Year

In reaching the quarter final in Cologne, Albot has now gone further than in any other event he has entered since the Paris Masters last October. He has had to battle to get this far though.

Having been taken to three sets by Pierre Hugues Herbert of France in the first round, he was then pushed all the way by the German qualifier Oscar Otte on Wednesday.

The first set began with the pair swapping service breaks but, when Albot broke again, he was able to serve out the set.

The second set then with serve until the 12th game when it was Albot who cracked under the pressure and lost his, allowing Otte to level the match.

The third set saw both men struggle for ascendancy, and both had chances to win it. In the end though, Albot’s greater experience showed and he was able to convert his first match point.

Auger-Aliassime v Albot Prediction and Tip

Auger-Aliassime should have comparatively little trouble against a player ranked 60 places below him in the world, and who has not been in good form this year.

Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win in straight sets: 3/5 (bet365)
